45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, All who shared in the life of Wanda Smith Center of
67 Cherokee were deeply saddened by her passing on March 3, 2021, at
78 the age of 70; and
89 WHEREAS, Born on July 31, 1950, in San Antonio, the former
910 Wanda Smith was the daughter of TJ and Loraine Smith, and she grew
1011 up in Pearsall with the companionship of her three siblings, Tommy,
1112 Steve, and Leanne; as a teenager, she moved with her family to Eagle
1213 Lake, and she graduated from Eagle Lake High School in 1968 before
1314 going on to attend Graceland College in Iowa; and
1415 WHEREAS, In 1969, she was joined in matrimony to Samuel
1516 Center, and the couple shared a fulfilling union that spanned more
1617 than half a century; Ms. Center took great pride in her two
1718 children, Brian and Leslie, and with the passing years, she had the
1819 pleasure of seeing her family grow to include five grandchildren,
1920 Riley, who preceded her in death, Mckinley, Gracyn, Kirby, and
2021 Samantha; and
2122 WHEREAS, Early in her marriage, Ms. Center worked for the
2223 Eagle Lake Insurance Agency and as a night dispatcher for the City
2324 of Eagle Lake Police Department; in 1982, she and her husband
2425 purchased the Snack Center, where she provided delicious meals to
2526 members of the community for many years; in addition, she was a
2627 librarian at the Eula and David Wintermann Library for five years,
2728 and she ultimately retired in 2004, after a decade as a purchaser
2829 with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Texas Youth
2930 Commission; and
3031 WHEREAS, Above all else, Ms. Center was devoted to her
3132 family, and she enjoyed spending time with her husband and
3233 granddaughters, traveling with friends, hunting, and fishing; she
3334 was also an avid quilter and made more than 100 quilts for her loved
3435 ones; a woman of strong faith, she was a valued congregant of the
3536 First Baptist Church of Cherokee, where she could often be found in
3637 the nursery, singing in the choir, or lending a helping hand; and
3738 WHEREAS, Wanda Center lived a full and generous life, and
3839 those who held her dear will forever remember her with deep
3940 admiration and affection; now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4142 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Wanda Smith Center
4243 and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her passing; and, be
4344 it further
4445 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4546 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4647 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Wanda
4748 Center.
