5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, All who shared in the life of Wanda Smith Center of |

6 | 7 | | Cherokee were deeply saddened by her passing on March 3, 2021, at |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born on July 31, 1950, in San Antonio, the former |
---|
9 | 10 | | Wanda Smith was the daughter of TJ and Loraine Smith, and she grew |
---|
10 | 11 | | up in Pearsall with the companionship of her three siblings, Tommy, |
---|
11 | 12 | | Steve, and Leanne; as a teenager, she moved with her family to Eagle |
---|
12 | 13 | | Lake, and she graduated from Eagle Lake High School in 1968 before |
---|
13 | 14 | | going on to attend Graceland College in Iowa; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In 1969, she was joined in matrimony to Samuel |
---|
15 | 16 | | Center, and the couple shared a fulfilling union that spanned more |
---|
16 | 17 | | than half a century; Ms. Center took great pride in her two |
---|
17 | 18 | | children, Brian and Leslie, and with the passing years, she had the |
---|
18 | 19 | | pleasure of seeing her family grow to include five grandchildren, |
---|
19 | 20 | | Riley, who preceded her in death, Mckinley, Gracyn, Kirby, and |
---|
20 | 21 | | Samantha; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Early in her marriage, Ms. Center worked for the |
---|
22 | 23 | | Eagle Lake Insurance Agency and as a night dispatcher for the City |
---|
23 | 24 | | of Eagle Lake Police Department; in 1982, she and her husband |
---|
24 | 25 | | purchased the Snack Center, where she provided delicious meals to |
---|
25 | 26 | | members of the community for many years; in addition, she was a |
---|
26 | 27 | | librarian at the Eula and David Wintermann Library for five years, |
---|
27 | 28 | | and she ultimately retired in 2004, after a decade as a purchaser |
---|
28 | 29 | | with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Texas Youth |
---|
29 | 30 | | Commission; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Above all else, Ms. Center was devoted to her |
---|
31 | 32 | | family, and she enjoyed spending time with her husband and |
---|
32 | 33 | | granddaughters, traveling with friends, hunting, and fishing; she |
---|
33 | 34 | | was also an avid quilter and made more than 100 quilts for her loved |
---|
34 | 35 | | ones; a woman of strong faith, she was a valued congregant of the |
---|
35 | 36 | | First Baptist Church of Cherokee, where she could often be found in |
---|
36 | 37 | | the nursery, singing in the choir, or lending a helping hand; and |
---|
37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Wanda Center lived a full and generous life, and |
---|
38 | 39 | | those who held her dear will forever remember her with deep |
---|
39 | 40 | | admiration and affection; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
41 | 42 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Wanda Smith Center |
---|
42 | 43 | | and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her passing; and, be |

43 | 44 | | it further |

44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

45 | 46 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |

46 | 47 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Wanda |
