5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Acclaimed chef Steve McHugh has made a positive |

6 | 7 | | impact in San Antonio through his charitable endeavors as well as |

7 | 8 | | through his contributions to the culinary scene; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A five-time James Beard Foundation Award finalist, |
---|
9 | 10 | | Mr. McHugh grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin; his mother, a |
---|
10 | 11 | | physician, treated patients without regard for their ability to |
---|
11 | 12 | | pay, and as he has risen in his career, he has followed the example |
---|
12 | 13 | | of generosity set by both his parents; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In high school, Mr. McHugh worked as a short-order |
---|
14 | 15 | | cook; he attended college for a while on a music scholarship but |
---|
15 | 16 | | changed direction, graduating from the Culinary Institute of |
---|
16 | 17 | | America; for 14 years, he worked in top New Orleans eateries, rising |
---|
17 | 18 | | to become executive chef at Restaurant August; he was tapped to |
---|
18 | 19 | | launch a new upscale restaurant in San Antonio in 2009 and underwent |
---|
19 | 20 | | treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma while getting Lüke up and |
---|
20 | 21 | | running; soon thereafter, he got involved with Light the Night |
---|
21 | 22 | | Walk, a major fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; he |

22 | 23 | | later joined the board of the organization's South Texas chapter; |

23 | 24 | | in addition, he traveled to Bastrop County to cook for families |

24 | 25 | | displaced by wildfires; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Mr. McHugh opened his own charcuterie-focused |

26 | 27 | | establishment, Cured, in 2013, and created a program to donate |
---|
27 | 28 | | funds and volunteer hours to worthy organizations; moreover, as the |
---|
28 | 29 | | restaurant gained a national reputation, he used his growing fame |
---|
29 | 30 | | to organize the annual "Cured for a Cure" fundraising dinner, |
---|
30 | 31 | | featuring prominent chefs from across the region, and the event has |
---|
31 | 32 | | raised tens of thousands of dollars for The Leukemia & Lymphoma |

32 | 33 | | Society; the Texas chapter of the National Restaurant Association |
---|
33 | 34 | | recognized Cured with the Texas Restaurant Neighbor Award for its |

34 | 35 | | civic engagement; and |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Committed to the vitality of the Alamo City |

36 | 37 | | restaurant scene, Mr. McHugh opened a second destination for |

37 | 38 | | gastronomes, Landrace, in 2021; it highlights the bounty of South |

38 | 39 | | Texas and Hill Country farms; and |

39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, While elevating San Antonio's place on the culinary |

40 | 41 | | map, Steve McHugh has also benefited the community through his good |

41 | 42 | | works, and he has earned the deep admiration and appreciation of his |
---|
42 | 43 | | fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

44 | 45 | | Legislature hereby honor Steve McHugh for his contributions to San |
---|
45 | 46 | | Antonio and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued |
