45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Acclaimed chef Steve McHugh has made a positive
67 impact in San Antonio through his charitable endeavors as well as
78 through his contributions to the culinary scene; and
89 WHEREAS, A five-time James Beard Foundation Award finalist,
910 Mr. McHugh grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin; his mother, a
1011 physician, treated patients without regard for their ability to
1112 pay, and as he has risen in his career, he has followed the example
1213 of generosity set by both his parents; and
1314 WHEREAS, In high school, Mr. McHugh worked as a short-order
1415 cook; he attended college for a while on a music scholarship but
1516 changed direction, graduating from the Culinary Institute of
1617 America; for 14 years, he worked in top New Orleans eateries, rising
1718 to become executive chef at Restaurant August; he was tapped to
1819 launch a new upscale restaurant in San Antonio in 2009 and underwent
1920 treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma while getting Lüke up and
2021 running; soon thereafter, he got involved with Light the Night
2122 Walk, a major fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; he
2223 later joined the board of the organization's South Texas chapter;
2324 in addition, he traveled to Bastrop County to cook for families
2425 displaced by wildfires; and
2526 WHEREAS, Mr. McHugh opened his own charcuterie-focused
2627 establishment, Cured, in 2013, and created a program to donate
2728 funds and volunteer hours to worthy organizations; moreover, as the
2829 restaurant gained a national reputation, he used his growing fame
2930 to organize the annual "Cured for a Cure" fundraising dinner,
3031 featuring prominent chefs from across the region, and the event has
3132 raised tens of thousands of dollars for The Leukemia & Lymphoma
3233 Society; the Texas chapter of the National Restaurant Association
3334 recognized Cured with the Texas Restaurant Neighbor Award for its
3435 civic engagement; and
3536 WHEREAS, Committed to the vitality of the Alamo City
3637 restaurant scene, Mr. McHugh opened a second destination for
3738 gastronomes, Landrace, in 2021; it highlights the bounty of South
3839 Texas and Hill Country farms; and
3940 WHEREAS, While elevating San Antonio's place on the culinary
4041 map, Steve McHugh has also benefited the community through his good
4142 works, and he has earned the deep admiration and appreciation of his
4243 fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it
4344 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4445 Legislature hereby honor Steve McHugh for his contributions to San
4546 Antonio and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
4647 success; and, be it further
4748 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4849 prepared for Mr. McHugh as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4950 House of Representatives.
