45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Thousands of families of the Hindu faith reside in
67 House District 26 and throughout the state of Texas, and their
78 religious traditions add to the rich cultural diversity found in
89 the Lone Star State; and
910 WHEREAS, Hindu New Year, an occasion celebrated by Hindus in
1011 India and by Hindus of other nationalities, takes place during the
1112 month of Chaitra, typically between March and April, according to
1213 the Hindu calendar; and
1314 WHEREAS, Hindus from different regions of India observe the
1415 New Year at different times and call it by many names, among them
1516 Varsha Pratipada, Yugadi, Ugadi, Gudi Padwa, Baisakhi, Bihu,
1617 Puthandu, Vishu, Pana Sankranti, and Pohela Boishakh; the Hindu New
1718 Year is commonly associated with spring and is accompanied by
1819 customs that vary from region to region, which include decorating
1920 homes with vibrant flowers, eating special foods, and enjoying
2021 other regional festivities with unique colors, rituals, and music;

2223 WHEREAS, Our state is enriched immeasurably by the
2324 contributions of Hindu Americans, a large and multifaceted
2425 population with a lush tapestry of beliefs and practices, and Hindu
2526 New Year is an important and much-anticipated event for Hindus who
2627 call Texas home; now, therefore, be it
2728 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
2829 Legislature hereby recognize April 1, 2022, as Hindu New Year and
2930 extend to Hindus across the state of Texas sincere best wishes for a
3031 joyous and memorable celebration.
