5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bill Dean is retiring from Texas Tech University |

6 | 7 | | on June 1, 2021, drawing to a close a distinguished 54-year career |

7 | 8 | | with the institution; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dean first joined Texas Tech in 1967 as director |
---|
9 | 10 | | of student publications, and he went on to become an associate |
---|
10 | 11 | | professor in the College of Media & Communication, where he has |
---|
11 | 12 | | taught classes in mass communications, journalism, and public |
---|
12 | 13 | | relations; moreover, he has served as an associate dean and as an |
---|
13 | 14 | | academic adviser, and he was president and CEO of the Texas Tech |
---|
14 | 15 | | Alumni Association, which named an expansion of the Merket Alumni |
---|
15 | 16 | | Center in honor of him and his wife, Peggy; he also held multiple |
---|
16 | 17 | | leadership positions in Phi Delta Theta; and |
---|
17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Among his many accolades, Dr. Dean was named the |
---|
18 | 19 | | Best Teacher at Texas Tech by students more than a dozen times, and |
---|
19 | 20 | | he twice received the President's Teaching Award for Excellence; in |
---|
20 | 21 | | 2015, he was presented with a Silver Medal Award by the Lubbock |
---|
21 | 22 | | Advertising Federation in recognition of his contributions to |
---|
22 | 23 | | advertising and public service, and in 2017, he was honored with a |
---|
23 | 24 | | Lifetime Service Award from the TTU College of Media & |
---|
24 | 25 | | Communication; and |

25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his work as an educator, Dr. Dean has |
---|
26 | 27 | | been involved with a number of civic organizations; he has served as |
---|
27 | 28 | | president of the board of the YMCA, as chair of the Lubbock Transit |
---|
28 | 29 | | advisory board, and as chair of the American Red Cross board; a |
---|
29 | 30 | | former baseball player, he has also directed the National Baseball |
---|
30 | 31 | | Congress Tournament and coached a number of youth baseball teams; |
---|

32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Prior to his tenure with Texas Tech, Dr. Dean served |
---|
33 | 34 | | with the U.S. Army on active duty and in the reserve, and in 1967, he |
---|
34 | 35 | | was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant; he went on to teach |
---|
35 | 36 | | journalism and work as student publications director at Lubbock |
---|
36 | 37 | | High School, and he later became the student activities director at |
---|
37 | 38 | | Coronado High School; he holds three degrees from Texas Tech, a |
---|
38 | 39 | | bachelor's degree in marketing, a master's degree in secondary |
---|
39 | 40 | | education, and a doctorate in education administration; and |
---|
40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Bill Dean's dedication and expertise have benefited |
---|
41 | 42 | | countless students and earned him the lasting respect and |
---|
42 | 43 | | admiration of his colleagues, and he may take great pride in his |
---|
43 | 44 | | exceptional record of achievement as he embarks on the next |
---|
44 | 45 | | exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore, be it |

45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
46 | 47 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Bill Dean on his retirement |
---|
47 | 48 | | from Texas Tech University and extend to him sincere best wishes for |

48 | 49 | | the future; and, be it further |

49 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
