| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, On Memorial Day 2021, the people of Ellis and |

| 6 | 7 | | Henderson Counties are joining Americans across the nation to honor |

| 7 | 8 | | those men and women in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice in |

| 8 | 9 | | the defense of our freedom; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, In the years after the Civil War, veterans and their |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | fellow citizens came together on Decoration Day to lay flowers on |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | the graves of those who lost their lives in combat on both sides of |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | the conflict; over time, the day became known as Memorial Day, and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | since the 1970s, it has been held on the last Monday in May; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Each year, in communities from coast to coast, |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | solemn ceremonies are held at cemeteries, courthouse squares, and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | veterans memorials; in accordance to tradition, the United States |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | flag is lowered to half staff early in the day and raised again at |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | noon, and Memorial Day events often feature a performance of |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | "Taps," a 21-gun salute, and a reading of the names of community |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | members who gave their lives in wartime; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The people of Ellis and Henderson Counties remember |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | their loved ones year-round with their handsome veterans memorials; |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | in Henderson County, an elegant redbrick memorial wall in the East |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Texas Arboretum lists the names of veterans from the county, while |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | the striking black granite tablets of the Ellis County Veterans |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Memorial pay homage to that county's fallen; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Generations of Texans have answered their nation's |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | call to duty, and on this day each year, it is incumbent upon us that |

| 29 | 30 | | we reflect on all that is asked of our servicemen and women, to whom |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | we owe a debt that the passage of time can never diminish; now, |

| 31 | 32 | | therefore, be it |

| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Memorial Day 2021 and pay tribute to |
