6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The tragic death of George Perry Floyd Jr. on May 25, |

7 | 7 | | 2020, at the age of 46, deeply saddened many people around the |
---|
8 | 8 | | country and across the world, including his friends and loved ones |
---|
9 | 9 | | in the State of Texas; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, George Floyd was born in Fayetteville, North |
---|
11 | 11 | | Carolina, on October 14, 1973, to George Perry and Larcenia Jones |
---|
12 | 12 | | Floyd; when he was just an infant, his family moved to Houston, |
---|
13 | 13 | | where he was raised in the Cuney Homes housing project in the Third |
---|
14 | 14 | | Ward neighborhood; as an athletic young man who stood at 6 feet, 7 |
---|
15 | 15 | | inches tall, he emerged as a star football and basketball player at |
---|
16 | 16 | | Jack Yates High School, where he was on the football team that |
---|
17 | 17 | | competed for the 1992 state championship; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, After graduating in 1993, Mr. Floyd studied at South |
---|
19 | 19 | | Florida State College before returning to Texas and transferring to |
---|
20 | 20 | | Texas A&M University-Kingsville; using the nickname "Big Floyd" |
---|
21 | 21 | | that he had earned during his days as an athlete, he went on to |
---|
22 | 22 | | collaborate as a freestyle rapper with DJ Screw, an influential |
---|
23 | 23 | | figure in Houston's hip-hop scene; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Floyd began a new chapter in his life when he |
---|
25 | 25 | | moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and found work as a truck driver, a |
---|
26 | 26 | | security guard, and a bouncer; as he had in Houston, he readily |
---|
27 | 27 | | endeared himself to new friends in the city, where he was known as a |
---|
28 | 28 | | gentle giant with a broad smile and a contagious sense of humor; |
---|
29 | 29 | | despite his imposing stature, his genuine kindness shone through in |
---|
30 | 30 | | his words and actions, especially in the generous way that he |
---|
31 | 31 | | supported those around him and encouraged them to reach their full |
---|
32 | 32 | | potential; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Floyd was the loving father of three children, |
---|
34 | 34 | | Tangie, Gianna, and Tyson; he shared a rewarding relationship with |
---|
35 | 35 | | his partner, Courteney Ross, and he enjoyed the affection of a large |
---|
36 | 36 | | extended family; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Although nearly a year has passed since George |
---|
38 | 38 | | Floyd's death shook the nation, he will forever be remembered not |
---|
39 | 39 | | only for his profound role in the fight for social justice and |
---|
40 | 40 | | change but also for uplifting countless people with his love and |
---|
41 | 41 | | friendship; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of George Perry Floyd Jr. |
---|
44 | 44 | | and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and to all those who |
---|
45 | 45 | | have mourned alongside them; and, be it further |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
47 | 47 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
48 | 48 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of George |
---|
49 | 49 | | Floyd. |
