55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, The tragic death of George Perry Floyd Jr. on May 25,
77 2020, at the age of 46, deeply saddened many people around the
88 country and across the world, including his friends and loved ones
99 in the State of Texas; and
1010 WHEREAS, George Floyd was born in Fayetteville, North
1111 Carolina, on October 14, 1973, to George Perry and Larcenia Jones
1212 Floyd; when he was just an infant, his family moved to Houston,
1313 where he was raised in the Cuney Homes housing project in the Third
1414 Ward neighborhood; as an athletic young man who stood at 6 feet, 7
1515 inches tall, he emerged as a star football and basketball player at
1616 Jack Yates High School, where he was on the football team that
1717 competed for the 1992 state championship; and
1818 WHEREAS, After graduating in 1993, Mr. Floyd studied at South
1919 Florida State College before returning to Texas and transferring to
2020 Texas A&M University-Kingsville; using the nickname "Big Floyd"
2121 that he had earned during his days as an athlete, he went on to
2222 collaborate as a freestyle rapper with DJ Screw, an influential
2323 figure in Houston's hip-hop scene; and
2424 WHEREAS, Mr. Floyd began a new chapter in his life when he
2525 moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and found work as a truck driver, a
2626 security guard, and a bouncer; as he had in Houston, he readily
2727 endeared himself to new friends in the city, where he was known as a
2828 gentle giant with a broad smile and a contagious sense of humor;
2929 despite his imposing stature, his genuine kindness shone through in
3030 his words and actions, especially in the generous way that he
3131 supported those around him and encouraged them to reach their full
3232 potential; and
3333 WHEREAS, Mr. Floyd was the loving father of three children,
3434 Tangie, Gianna, and Tyson; he shared a rewarding relationship with
3535 his partner, Courteney Ross, and he enjoyed the affection of a large
3636 extended family; and
3737 WHEREAS, Although nearly a year has passed since George
3838 Floyd's death shook the nation, he will forever be remembered not
3939 only for his profound role in the fight for social justice and
4040 change but also for uplifting countless people with his love and
4141 friendship; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4343 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of George Perry Floyd Jr.
4444 and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and to all those who
4545 have mourned alongside them; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4747 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4848 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of George
4949 Floyd.
