5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and |

6 | 7 | | meaningful accomplishments remain to comfort the family and friends |

7 | 8 | | of Mary Virginia Smith Pendergrass, who passed away on October 19, |

8 | 9 | | 2019, at the age of 92; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Henry and Jewel Tate Smith, the |
---|
10 | 11 | | former Mary Smith was born in Huntsville on September 14, 1927; she |
---|
11 | 12 | | graduated from North High School in Columbus, Ohio, and earned a |
---|
12 | 13 | | sociology degree from Baylor University in 1948; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Pendergrass worked as executive director of |
---|
14 | 15 | | the Camp Fire Girls of Alice and went on to serve as president of the |
---|
15 | 16 | | 20th Century Study Club and the Parent Teachers Association in |
---|
16 | 17 | | Pittsburg; named Woman of the Year by the Pittsburg-Camp County |
---|
17 | 18 | | Chamber of Commerce, she led efforts to pay domestic workers |
---|
18 | 19 | | minimum wage, and she helped start the county's first Republican |
---|
19 | 20 | | Party; furthermore, she was a Camp County child protective services |
---|
20 | 21 | | officer and an adult probation officer in Mount Pleasant; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In 1981, Mrs. Pendergrass moved to Austin, earning |
---|
22 | 23 | | her Texas real estate and broker licenses and specializing in |
---|
23 | 24 | | national relocation for Sherry Brown Realtors; civically engaged, |
---|
24 | 25 | | she twice served as a delegate for Texas State Republican |
---|
25 | 26 | | Conventions and lent her time to the board of directors of the |
---|
26 | 27 | | Austin Musical Theater; she was also president of The Order of the |
---|
27 | 28 | | Daughters of the King and a longtime congregant of St. David's |
---|
28 | 29 | | Episcopal Church; and |
---|
29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Mrs. Pendergrass enjoyed the |

30 | 31 | | love and support of her husband, Dr. Robert Keith Pendergrass Sr., |
---|
31 | 32 | | with whom she shared a rewarding marriage of 67 years until his |
---|
32 | 33 | | death; she took great pride in her four children, Robert, Mary, |
---|
33 | 34 | | Henry, and Peter, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Mary Pendergrass showered those she held dear with |

36 | 37 | | unconditional love, and she leaves behind a legacy of faith, |

37 | 38 | | kindness, and generosity that will continue to inspire all who knew |

39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Mary Virginia Smith |
