87R26446 CW-D By: Ortega H.R. No. 1373 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, An exemplary student received well-deserved recognition when Carla M. Rodriguez was named a University of Texas at El Paso Top Ten Senior for 2021; and WHEREAS, Presented by the UTEP Alumni Association, the award recognizes the university's most promising graduating or recently graduated seniors; honorees are chosen on the basis of multiple criteria, including academic achievement, involvement, leadership, and service, both in the community and on campus; and WHEREAS, The first woman in her family to obtain an undergraduate degree, Ms. Rodriguez studied organizational and corporate communication at UTEP; during her college career, she has distinguished herself by making the dean's list, and she has balanced a challenging academic course load with work and speech and debate competitions, advancing to the semifinals at the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament and the finals at the International Forensics Association tournament; she has received scholarships from the Women's Fund of El Paso, the Houston Endowment Fund, and the Public Leadership Education Network; and WHEREAS, Ms. Rodriguez is a teaching assistant for the Department of Teacher Education, and she has participated in such organizations as the Campus Vote Project, the Creative Writing Society, and the Texas Rising campus chapter; she plans to pursue graduate work in legal studies and international law and then to attend law school; ultimately, she hopes to embark on a career as a communications director and policy advisor in federal government or with a governmental nonprofit; and WHEREAS, Through the dedication she has demonstrated in all her endeavors, Carla M. Rodriguez has built a strong foundation for continued achievement, and she is indeed deserving of this prestigious accolade; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Carla M. Rodriguez on her receipt of a 2021 Top Ten Seniors Award from the UTEP Alumni Association and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Rodriguez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
