5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Literacy Achieves demonstrated a steadfast |

7 | 8 | | neighborhood of Dallas in the wake of the devastating winter storm |

8 | 9 | | of February 2021; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, For more than two decades, Literacy Achieves has |

10 | 11 | | taught English as a Second Language to local residents; the |
---|
11 | 12 | | organization swiftly changed its focus in February to respond to |
---|
12 | 13 | | the immediate needs of the community during Winter Storm Uri; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Literacy Achieves opened its two school buildings as |
---|
14 | 15 | | a warming center, food pantry, and water depot; faith groups and |
---|
15 | 16 | | individuals heard about its efforts and brought food, clothing, |
---|
16 | 17 | | diapers, blankets, and other supplies, while restaurants provided |
---|
17 | 18 | | hot meals; well over 1,000 families sought and received assistance; |

19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The tireless dedication of Literacy Achieves made a |

20 | 21 | | positive difference in the lives of Vickery Meadow residents during |

21 | 22 | | a time of crisis, and the organization set an inspiring example of |

22 | 23 | | civic leadership by adapting to assist others in a new way; now, |

24 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

25 | 26 | | Legislature hereby commend Literacy Achieves for its outstanding |

26 | 27 | | contributions to members of the Vickery Meadow community impacted |

27 | 28 | | by Winter Storm Uri and extend to all those associated with the |
