5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Dallas-based education nonprofit United to |

8 | 9 | | COVID-19 pandemic; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, When the pandemic caused the closure of Dallas ISD |

10 | 11 | | campuses, United to Learn distributed thousands of books for |

11 | 12 | | children to create home libraries, and it also underwrote the cost |
---|
12 | 13 | | of video equipment and stipends to teachers looking to extend |
---|
13 | 14 | | summer learning; and |

14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 2012, United to Learn mobilizes |
---|
15 | 16 | | volunteers from public and private schools, faith-based |
---|
16 | 17 | | organizations, and businesses to partner with Dallas ISD, and their |
---|
17 | 18 | | work is directed by the group's four pillars; these include |
---|
18 | 19 | | strengthening social and emotional health, creating aspirational |
---|
19 | 20 | | learning environments, accelerating student achievement in |
---|
20 | 21 | | literacy, and activating an informed community; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, United to Learn's first 27 partner schools have seen |
---|
22 | 23 | | a 39 percent improvement in literacy, outpacing county and state |
---|
23 | 24 | | averages, and the program has since expanded to 47 Dallas |
---|
24 | 25 | | elementary schools, addressing opportunity gaps with |
---|
25 | 26 | | research-driven, district-aligned programming; and |
---|
26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, During a time of crisis, when the education of many |

27 | 28 | | children was interrupted, United to Learn provided valuable |
---|
28 | 29 | | resources and encouragement, building on its already impressive |
---|
29 | 30 | | record of inspiring lasting change for students in the Dallas area; |
---|
30 | 31 | | now, therefore, be it |

31 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

32 | 33 | | Legislature hereby commend United to Learn for its support of the |

33 | 34 | | Dallas Independent School District during the COVID-19 pandemic and |

34 | 35 | | extend to all those associated with the nonprofit sincere best |
---|
