5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Colonel Jay O. Brewer, the beloved "voice" of the |

6 | 7 | | Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, retired after 40 years of service as the |

7 | 8 | | band's senior associate director and announcer on April 30, 2021; |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, A native of Channelview, Jay Brewer enrolled at |
---|
10 | 11 | | Texas A&M University and joined the Aggie Band as a trombone player |
---|
11 | 12 | | in 1977; he went on to earn a bachelor's degree in mechanized |
---|
12 | 13 | | agriculture, and on his graduation day in 1981, he was contacted by |
---|
13 | 14 | | Aggie Band director Joe T. Haney and asked to join his staff; |
---|
14 | 15 | | Colonel Brewer later continued his studies at Sam Houston State |
---|
15 | 16 | | University before obtaining his master's degree in music education |
---|
16 | 17 | | at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois; and |

17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, As the band's senior associate director, Colonel |

18 | 19 | | Brewer charted drills, taught music, counseled band cadets, and |
---|
19 | 20 | | oversaw the maintenance of instruments; his most memorable role, |
---|
20 | 21 | | however, was announcing the band during all halftime drills, when |
---|
21 | 22 | | he delivered the iconic words, "Now forming at the north end of Kyle |
---|
22 | 23 | | Field, the nationally famous Fightin' Texas Aggie Band"; over the |
---|
23 | 24 | | course of his career, he served as a mentor to numerous young men |
---|
24 | 25 | | and women and made a profound difference in many lives; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Colonel Brewer was recognized with the 2002 |
---|
26 | 27 | | President's Meritorious Service Award and with the 2006 John J. |
---|
27 | 28 | | Koldus III Faculty and Staff Achievement Award; in 2017, he retired |
---|
28 | 29 | | from the Texas State Guard, where Aggie Band directors serve, and |
---|
29 | 30 | | was given honorary reserve status; he finished out his final season |
---|
30 | 31 | | as the Aggie Band announcer in the fall of 2020; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, While it is difficult to imagine the halftime |
---|
32 | 33 | | performances of the Aggie Band without Jay Brewer, he played an |
---|
33 | 34 | | immeasurable role in furthering the organization's tradition of |
---|
34 | 35 | | excellence, and his contributions will continue to resonate in the |
---|
35 | 36 | | years to come; now, therefore, be it |

36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Colonel Jay O. Brewer on the |
---|
38 | 39 | | occasion of his retirement as senior associate director and |
---|
39 | 40 | | announcer for the Aggie Band at Texas A&M University and extend to |

40 | 41 | | him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
