45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Colonel Jay O. Brewer, the beloved "voice" of the
67 Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, retired after 40 years of service as the
78 band's senior associate director and announcer on April 30, 2021;
89 and
910 WHEREAS, A native of Channelview, Jay Brewer enrolled at
1011 Texas A&M University and joined the Aggie Band as a trombone player
1112 in 1977; he went on to earn a bachelor's degree in mechanized
1213 agriculture, and on his graduation day in 1981, he was contacted by
1314 Aggie Band director Joe T. Haney and asked to join his staff;
1415 Colonel Brewer later continued his studies at Sam Houston State
1516 University before obtaining his master's degree in music education
1617 at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois; and
1718 WHEREAS, As the band's senior associate director, Colonel
1819 Brewer charted drills, taught music, counseled band cadets, and
1920 oversaw the maintenance of instruments; his most memorable role,
2021 however, was announcing the band during all halftime drills, when
2122 he delivered the iconic words, "Now forming at the north end of Kyle
2223 Field, the nationally famous Fightin' Texas Aggie Band"; over the
2324 course of his career, he served as a mentor to numerous young men
2425 and women and made a profound difference in many lives; and
2526 WHEREAS, Colonel Brewer was recognized with the 2002
2627 President's Meritorious Service Award and with the 2006 John J.
2728 Koldus III Faculty and Staff Achievement Award; in 2017, he retired
2829 from the Texas State Guard, where Aggie Band directors serve, and
2930 was given honorary reserve status; he finished out his final season
3031 as the Aggie Band announcer in the fall of 2020; and
3132 WHEREAS, While it is difficult to imagine the halftime
3233 performances of the Aggie Band without Jay Brewer, he played an
3334 immeasurable role in furthering the organization's tradition of
3435 excellence, and his contributions will continue to resonate in the
3536 years to come; now, therefore, be it
3637 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3738 Legislature hereby congratulate Colonel Jay O. Brewer on the
3839 occasion of his retirement as senior associate director and
3940 announcer for the Aggie Band at Texas A&M University and extend to
4041 him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4142 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4243 prepared for Colonel Brewer as an expression of high regard by the
4344 Texas House of Representatives.
