| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the |

| 6 | 7 | | passing of admired educator Stephen Avery Warren of Austin on |

| 7 | 8 | | February 2, 2021, at the age of 73; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of William S. Warren and Betsy Avery Warren, |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Steve Warren was born in Columbia, Missouri, on May 2, 1947; he |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | attended O. Henry Middle School and Austin High School and earned a |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | bachelor's degree in English from The University of Texas at |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Austin, where he was a catcher on the baseball team; in 1970, he |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and he flew F-8 fighter jets for six |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | years before joining the Navy Reserve; he completed his master's |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | degree in education at UT while serving in the reserve; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, In 1978, Mr. Warren began teaching English at his |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | old middle school; he later joined the Austin High faculty as a |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | teacher and tennis coach; four of his players won state 5A |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | championships and he sent a team to state semifinals; in 1985, he |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | was selected as one of two Texans in the NASA Teacher in Space |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Project, and following the Challenger disaster, he worked with |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | other participants and NASA to develop a nationwide curriculum |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | incorporating the study of space travel; he was truly dedicated to |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | his students and instilled valuable life lessons while helping them |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | to overcome obstacles; named Austin High Teacher of the Year four |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | times, he was inducted into the school's hall of honor; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Warren was a gifted storyteller as well; after |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | winning two national playwrights' competitions and the Hollywood |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | Symposium Screenplay Contest, he retired in 2000 as a teacher and as |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | a captain in the reserve in order to write full time; his |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | productions included Rebel Yells, Gone to Texas, and Confessions of |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | Davy Crockett; a man of deep faith, he served as a Sunday school |

| 33 | 34 | | teacher, first reader, and board member for the Christian Science |

| 34 | 35 | | Church, where he met his future wife, Debbi; they married on March |

| 35 | 36 | | 2, 2001; he took great pride in his three children, Brad Buchanan, |

| 36 | 37 | | Brett Buchanan, and Jen Silver, and in his eight grandchildren, |

| 37 | 38 | | Abby, Will, Ava, Violet, Jack, Vivian, Shepherd, and Henry; and |

| 38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Steve Warren enriched the lives of countless people, |

| 39 | 40 | | and while his death has brought great sadness to all who knew him, |

| 40 | 41 | | they will forever treasure their memories of his humor, warmth, and |

| 41 | 42 | | kindness; now, therefore, be it |

| 42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Stephen Avery Warren |
