5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |

6 | 7 | | 87th Texas Legislature are pleased to recognize Brazoria County and |

7 | 8 | | to honor its residents for the important contributions they are |

8 | 9 | | making to the Lone Star State; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, This section of coastal prairie along the Brazos |
---|
10 | 11 | | River was settled in the 1820s by members of Stephen F. Austin's Old |
---|
11 | 12 | | Three Hundred; Henry Smith of Brazoria served as the first |
---|
12 | 13 | | American-born governor of the Mexican territory of Texas and as a |
---|
13 | 14 | | leader of the movement for independence; the town of Columbia was |
---|
14 | 15 | | the capital of Texas during the first Texas Congress, and in 1836, |
---|
15 | 16 | | Brazoria County became one of the original counties established by |
---|
16 | 17 | | the new republic; and |
---|
17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Farming and ranching initially constituted the |
---|
18 | 19 | | mainstays of the county's economy; the discovery of oil and sulfur |
---|
19 | 20 | | deposits in the early 20th century helped the region grow, and |
---|
20 | 21 | | chemical processing became increasingly important during World |
---|
21 | 22 | | War II and after; commercial fishing and the recreation industry |
---|
22 | 23 | | have helped to ensure continuing economic development; and |

23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Today, the numerous cities and towns of Brazoria |
---|
24 | 25 | | County boast excellent schools and affordable housing; visitors and |
---|
25 | 26 | | residents alike take great pleasure in miles of sandy beaches, bay |
---|
26 | 27 | | and offshore fishing, scuba diving, outstanding bird-watching, and |
---|
27 | 28 | | the Brazoria and San Bernard National Wildlife Refuges; the county |
---|
28 | 29 | | is also home to such attractions as the Varner-Hogg Plantation |
---|
29 | 30 | | State Historic Site, and the county seat of Angleton traditionally |
---|
30 | 31 | | hosts the Brazoria County Fair, one of the largest events of its |
---|
31 | 32 | | kind in Texas; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, The educational opportunities available to students |
---|
33 | 34 | | at Alvin Community College, Brazosport College, and the University |
---|
34 | 35 | | of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus further enhance the quality |
---|
35 | 36 | | of life in the county; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, The largest chemical complex in North America, the |
---|
37 | 38 | | Texas Gulf Coast Regional Airport, and a flourishing health care |
---|
38 | 39 | | industry are among the major contributors to economic growth in the |
---|
39 | 40 | | county, and Port Freeport, ranked 10th in chemicals, 19th in total |
---|
40 | 41 | | tonnage, and 26th in containers in the United States, is one of the |
---|
41 | 42 | | fastest-growing ports on the Gulf Coast; and |
---|
42 | 43 | | WHEREAS, The people of Brazoria County take great pride in |
---|
43 | 44 | | their rich history as they work together to build an even brighter |
---|
44 | 45 | | future, and it is indeed appropriate to take this opportunity to |
---|
45 | 46 | | honor them; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
47 | 48 | | Legislature hereby recognize Brazoria County and extend to its |
---|
48 | 49 | | citizens sincere best wishes for the future. |
