56 WHEREAS, Legendary sportscaster Dale Hansen is retiring from
67 WFAA in Dallas after his final show on September 2, 2021, drawing to
78 a close an exceptional career with the television station that has
89 spanned nearly four decades; and
910 WHEREAS, Mr. Hansen has held numerous radio and television
1011 jobs over the course of almost a half century; he first worked as a
1112 disc jockey and operations manager at a radio station in Newton,
1213 Iowa, and then accepted a sports reporter job at KMTV in Omaha,
1314 Nebraska; he moved to Dallas in 1980, honing his skills at KDFW
1415 before joining WFAA in 1983; his inaugural WFAA show aired on March
1516 28 of that year, and soon thereafter, the Channel 8 station debuted
1617 Dale Hansen's Sports Special, which remains a staple of its Sunday
1718 night lineup; and
1819 WHEREAS, A weeknight sports anchor who is one of the most
1920 recognized personalities in Dallas-Fort Worth TV history,
2021 Mr. Hansen has played a vital role in helping WFAA hold its ratings
2122 lead in the coveted 10 p.m. time slot; through the years, he has
2223 covered every major sports story involving area teams and events,
2324 including three Stanley Cup Finals, two World Series, two NBA
2425 Finals, and the 1990s run of success enjoyed by the Dallas Cowboys
2526 when they won three Super Bowls in four years; and
2627 WHEREAS, Never one to shy away from hard-hitting and
2728 controversial topics, Mr. Hansen has earned national attention
2829 with his award-winning exposés and biting commentaries; much of his
2930 work has gone viral, leading to profiles in the New York Times and
3031 the Washington Post and a guest appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres
3132 Show; in recent years, he has also delivered editorials on pressing
3233 social issues through his "Unplugged" segment; and
3334 WHEREAS, In 1987, Mr. Hansen received the George Foster
3435 Peabody Award for Distinguished Journalism and the Alfred I.
3536 duPont-Columbia University Award following his investigative
3637 coverage of a scandal involving the Southern Methodist University
3738 football program; further, in 2019, he became the first local
3839 on-air broadcaster to garner the Radio Television Digital News
3940 Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award; his other honors include the
4041 Dallas Peace & Justice Center Inspiration Award and multiple Lone
4142 Star EMMY and Texas Sportscaster of the Year awards; and
4243 WHEREAS, Widely known as the dean of sportscasters in the
4344 Lone Star State, Dale Hansen has demonstrated remarkable talent and
4445 a deep commitment to quality journalism, and he may indeed reflect
4546 with pride on a job well done; now, therefore, be it
4647 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4748 Legislature hereby congratulate sportscaster Dale Hansen on his
4849 retirement from WFAA in Dallas and extend to him sincere best wishes
4950 for the future; and, be it further
5051 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5152 prepared for Mr. Hansen as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5253 House of Representatives.
