56 WHEREAS, In late April 2021, the State of Texas reached a
67 sobering milestone when it surpassed 50,000 deaths of its citizens
78 from COVID-19; and
89 WHEREAS, The state's death toll, out of more than two million
910 recorded cases, is the third-highest in the nation; since the first
1011 death from the disease was reported in Matagorda County on March 16,
1112 2020, our state has battled several devastating surges in cases,
1213 particularly in the early summer months and in the months
1314 surrounding the holiday season; on November 13, 2020, Texas for the
1415 first time exceeded one million confirmed cases, and on January 11,
1516 2021, a record of over 14,000 Texans were hospitalized due to
1617 COVID-19; and
1718 WHEREAS, The majority of deaths from COVID-19 have occurred
1819 in hospitals, where terminally ill patients have suffered in
1920 isolation from their loved ones; despite heroic efforts on the part
2021 of nurses, physicians, and other health care workers, far too many
2122 Texas families have dealt with the grief and heartbreak of losing
2223 someone to COVID-19; those who perished have included fathers and
2324 mothers, brothers and sisters, grandparents and
2425 great-grandparents, children, and friends, whose deaths have left a
2526 tremendous void in their communities and in the lives of those who
2627 knew them; and
2728 WHEREAS, Although our state's death toll is a grim reflection
2829 of the scale of the COVID-19 pandemic, it cannot adequately convey
2930 the full human impact of this tragedy, and it is fitting that we
3031 honor the memories of those Texans who are no longer with us as we
3132 express our sympathy toward those who are rebuilding their lives in
3233 their absence; now, therefore, be it
3334 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3435 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the more than 50,000 people who
3536 died from COVID-19 in the State of Texas and extend heartfelt
3637 condolences to their surviving families and friends.
