45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, On the morning of December 7, 1941, hundreds of
67 Japanese warplanes struck the American naval base in Pearl Harbor,
78 Hawaii, propelling the United States into the maelstrom of World
89 War II; and
910 WHEREAS, The attack on that terrible day claimed 2,403 lives
1011 and wounded more than 1,100 others; it also left 8 battleships, 3
1112 cruisers, 4 destroyers, and 6 additional vessels sunk or damaged
1213 and 188 U.S. aircraft destroyed; and
1314 WHEREAS, Proclaimed a "date which will live in infamy" by
1415 President Franklin D. Roosevelt, December 7, 1941, witnessed one of
1516 the darkest moments in this nation's history, but there soon dawned
1617 an era of extraordinary resilience and strength of character among
1718 the American public; the United States entered the war against
1819 Japan, Germany, and Italy within days and went on to play a crucial
1920 role in the global coalition against the Axis powers; from those
2021 fighting on the front lines to the civilians contributing to the war
2122 effort on the home front, Americans banded together to oppose the
2223 growing threat of tyranny around the world, and their contributions
2324 helped the Allies to emerge victorious in one of the most important
2425 struggles in human history; and
2526 WHEREAS, The U.S. Congress later designated December 7 of
2627 each year as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, and on that
2728 solemn anniversary, we lower our flags and bow our heads for a
2829 moment of silence; and
2930 WHEREAS, When reflecting on the attack on Pearl Harbor, it is
3031 incumbent on our nation to pay tribute to all the lives that were
3132 lost on that fateful day and to honor the courageous men and women
3233 who went forth to ensure that those deaths were not suffered in
3334 vain; now, therefore, be it
3435 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3536 Legislature hereby commemorate December 7, 2021, as the 80th
3637 anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
