| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |

| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Athens was first incorporated in 1856, and through |

| 10 | 11 | | the decades, this charming East Texas town has seen significant |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | growth; today, its diverse economic base includes industrial |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | manufacturing and other businesses in addition to farming and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | livestock ventures; education is a key element in the town's |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | productivity, with Trinity Valley Community College and the area's |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | other schools helping residents to prepare for the future; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The county seat of Henderson County, Athens is home |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | to a growing number of wineries, restaurants, and shops, and it has |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | been called the Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the World for the years |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | when "cowpeas" were a major crop for the local farming community; |

| 20 | 21 | | Athens was also named the Original Home of the Hamburger by the |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Texas Legislature in tribute to the role that local resident |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Fletcher Davis played in the creation of this American favorite; |

| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Visitors and residents alike enjoy such cultural |

| 25 | 26 | | institutions as the East Texas Arboretum, the Henderson County |

| 26 | 27 | | Performing Arts Center, the Cain Center, the Henderson County |

| 27 | 28 | | Fairpark Complex, and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, where |

| 28 | 29 | | 300,000 gallons of aquarium exhibits feature a wide variety of |

| 29 | 30 | | native Texas fish in natural environments; and |

| 30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, This lovely town continues to be one of the Lone Star |

| 31 | 32 | | State's great assets and an outstanding area in which to live, work, |

| 32 | 33 | | and raise a family, and its citizens may indeed take pride in the |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | place they call home; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 35 | 36 | | Legislature hereby honor the city of Athens and extend to all its |

| 36 | 37 | | residents sincere best wishes for the future. |
