5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The observance of National Glaucoma Awareness Month |

6 | 7 | | in January 2022 provides an important opportunity to promote |

7 | 8 | | awareness of this leading cause of irreversible blindness; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, It is estimated that more than three million people |
---|
9 | 10 | | in the U.S. suffer from glaucoma, a group of eye diseases |
---|
10 | 11 | | characterized by damage to the optic nerve; there are virtually no |
---|
11 | 12 | | symptoms associated with open-angle glaucoma, the most common form, |
---|
12 | 13 | | and approximately half of those who have any type of glaucoma do not |
---|
13 | 14 | | know that they have the disease; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, While there is not yet a cure, early detection is |
---|
15 | 16 | | critical to slowing optic nerve damage and saving eyesight in |
---|
16 | 17 | | glaucoma patients; the need for greater awareness is especially |
---|
17 | 18 | | important in a number of high-risk groups, including senior |
---|
18 | 19 | | citizens, individuals with diabetes, and people with a family |
---|
19 | 20 | | history of glaucoma; individuals in these categories are encouraged |
---|
20 | 21 | | to receive comprehensive dilated eye exams to identify the disease |
---|
21 | 22 | | early and begin treatment; and |

22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Diagnosis is the first step in the fight against |

23 | 24 | | glaucoma, and making eye care an essential part of a regular health |

24 | 25 | | maintenance program is vital to protecting and preserving our |

25 | 26 | | vision; now, therefore, be it |

26 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
27 | 28 | | Legislature hereby recognize National Glaucoma Awareness Month in |
---|
28 | 29 | | January 2022 and urge all residents of the Lone Star State to become |
---|
29 | 30 | | informed about glaucoma detection and treatment. |
