45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The observance of National Glaucoma Awareness Month
67 in January 2022 provides an important opportunity to promote
78 awareness of this leading cause of irreversible blindness; and
89 WHEREAS, It is estimated that more than three million people
910 in the U.S. suffer from glaucoma, a group of eye diseases
1011 characterized by damage to the optic nerve; there are virtually no
1112 symptoms associated with open-angle glaucoma, the most common form,
1213 and approximately half of those who have any type of glaucoma do not
1314 know that they have the disease; and
1415 WHEREAS, While there is not yet a cure, early detection is
1516 critical to slowing optic nerve damage and saving eyesight in
1617 glaucoma patients; the need for greater awareness is especially
1718 important in a number of high-risk groups, including senior
1819 citizens, individuals with diabetes, and people with a family
1920 history of glaucoma; individuals in these categories are encouraged
2021 to receive comprehensive dilated eye exams to identify the disease
2122 early and begin treatment; and
2223 WHEREAS, Diagnosis is the first step in the fight against
2324 glaucoma, and making eye care an essential part of a regular health
2425 maintenance program is vital to protecting and preserving our
2526 vision; now, therefore, be it
2627 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
2728 Legislature hereby recognize National Glaucoma Awareness Month in
2829 January 2022 and urge all residents of the Lone Star State to become
2930 informed about glaucoma detection and treatment.
