8 | 9 | | republic that would stand on its own for more than nine years before |
---|
9 | 10 | | becoming the 28th state of the United States of America; and |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The proud Texans who issued the call for |
---|
11 | 12 | | independence were impelled by Mexican dictator Antonio López de |
---|
12 | 13 | | Santa Anna's adoption of a new constitution in 1836, which |
---|
13 | 14 | | eliminated all vestiges of states' rights for Texas and other |
---|
14 | 15 | | Mexican states; members of the Convention of 1836 met at |
---|
15 | 16 | | Washington-on-the-Brazos on March 1 of that fateful year and wrote |
---|
16 | 17 | | the Texas Declaration of Independence; as they gathered, the |
---|
17 | 18 | | valiant defenders of the Alamo were facing off against the troops of |
---|
18 | 19 | | Santa Anna, and the Texas revolutionaries had reached a crucial |
---|
19 | 20 | | point in their campaign for greater political freedom; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, A free and independent Republic of Texas was |

21 | 22 | | officially declared on March 2, 1836; stating the views of the |
---|
22 | 23 | | delegates in no uncertain terms, the Texas Declaration of |

23 | 24 | | Independence listed their grievances against the Mexican |
---|
24 | 25 | | government and announced their bold conclusion: "that the people of |

25 | 26 | | Texas do now constitute a free, Sovereign, and independent |
---|
26 | 27 | | republic, and are fully invested with all the rights and attributes |

27 | 28 | | which properly belong to independent nations"; and |

28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Winning that independence on the battlefield would |

29 | 30 | | take another six weeks and the lives of many brave Texans, but with |

30 | 31 | | this remarkable proclamation, the 59 signatories of the Texas |

31 | 32 | | Declaration of Independence had enunciated a vision of liberty, |

32 | 33 | | independence, and just government and charted a dramatic new course |

34 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

35 | 36 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Texas Independence Day 2022 and pay |
