55 WHEREAS, Donald J. Dunlap of Corpus Christi, general manager
66 and president of KEDT, is marking a half century in broadcasting in
77 2022; and
88 WHEREAS, A Robstown native, Don Dunlap joined KEDT at its
99 inception in 1972; he was employed as an engineer, television
1010 production manager, operations manager, and assistant general
1111 manager before taking the helm of the station in 1996; partnering
1212 with the Texas State Aquarium and the Art Museum of South Texas, he
1313 served as executive producer on two nationally distributed public
1414 television series, Wonders Under the Sea and Art Journeys; his
1515 tenure has brought a wealth of local programming, including the
16- documentary Justice for My People: The Hector P. Garcia Story, the
16+ documentary Justice for My People: The Hector P. Garcia Story; the
1717 high school quiz show Challenge, now in its 17th season, and The
18- KEDT Edition, a discussion forum for community leaders; and

1919 WHEREAS, his engineering and fundraising acumen enabled the
2020 South Texas Public Broadcasting System to add a second radio tower
2121 in Victoria to deliver high-definition television and digital radio
2222 programming; In 2016, Mr. Dunlap guided the station into a new era
2323 with the relocation of KEDT-TV and KEDT-FM to the $48-million KEDT
2424 Center for Educational Broadcasting at Del Mar College; moreover,
2525 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the station expanded digital services
2626 to the Valley and instituted daily radio health newscasts and
2727 launched PBS Learning Media, a free distance-learning tool for
2828 teachers and students; it collaborated with the Corpus Christi
2929 Independent School District on Operation Stay Connected, providing
3030 basic math and reading instruction for prekindergarten through the
3131 second grade, taught by CCISD teachers; and
3232 WHEREAS, Mr. Dunlap serves on advisory committees for PBS and
3333 the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; he has worked tirelessly
3434 at the local, state, and national levels on the digital conversion
3535 of public television, and he has given generously of his time and
3636 expertise in numerous leadership roles, among them chair of the
3737 National Educational Telecommunications Association and member of
3838 the Del Mar College curriculum advisory board; and
3939 WHEREAS, Few in broadcasting can claim a career as long and
4040 impactful, and through his outstanding contributions to KEDT and
4141 the communities it serves, Don Dunlap has earned the admiration and
4242 appreciation of countless South Texans; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4444 Legislature hereby honor Donald J. Dunlap for a half century of
4545 service to public broadcasting and extend to him sincere best
4646 wishes for the future; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4848 prepared for Mr. Dunlap as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4949 House of Representatives.
