5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists |

6 | 7 | | hijacked four civilian airplanes in the skies over the United |
---|
7 | 8 | | States; the worst terror attack on the American people in the |
---|
8 | 9 | | country's history proceeded to unfold on that horrific day; in a |
---|
9 | 10 | | coordinated attack, the hijackers intentionally flew two of the |
---|
10 | 11 | | planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and a third |
---|
11 | 12 | | into the Pentagon; and |
---|
12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Learning about the other hijackings, passengers and |
---|
13 | 14 | | crew members on the fourth plane, Flight 93, launched a |
---|
14 | 15 | | counterattack, spurring the hijacker pilot to crash the plane into |
---|
15 | 16 | | a field in Pennsylvania; nearly 3,000 people were killed in the |
---|
16 | 17 | | different locations, the single largest loss of life resulting from |
---|
17 | 18 | | a foreign attack on American soil; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, While September 11 will forever be remembered as a |
---|
19 | 20 | | day of tragedy and loss, we also remember the selfless |
---|
20 | 21 | | determination of law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other |
---|
21 | 22 | | rescue workers who charged into danger that morning and in the days |
---|
22 | 23 | | after; these first responders continued to show up and search for |
---|
23 | 24 | | survivors and remains in the days and weeks after the attacks, and |
---|
24 | 25 | | many of these heroes lost their lives assisting the people who were |
---|
25 | 26 | | trapped and injured; and |
---|
26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, United in grief, Americans helped in every way |
---|
27 | 28 | | possible; we gave blood and said prayers, with some even |
---|
28 | 29 | | volunteering to help in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World |
---|
29 | 30 | | Trade Center, Pentagon, and Flight 93 sites; we performed acts of |
---|
30 | 31 | | charity and comforted each other, and we stood united as a nation; |
---|
31 | 32 | | and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, In December 2001, the U.S. Congress passed a joint |
---|
33 | 34 | | resolution designating September 11 of each year as Patriot Day; on |
---|
34 | 35 | | that solemn anniversary, we lower our flags and bow our heads for a |
---|
35 | 36 | | moment of silence; this day reminds us that our nation is still |
---|
36 | 37 | | working to effectively combat terrorism that threatens the United |
---|
37 | 38 | | States of America, while remembering the brave souls who have lost |
---|
38 | 39 | | their lives in the process; and |
---|
39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Patriot Day is a tribute to the innocent and those |
---|
40 | 41 | | who died trying to rescue them; it is also a pledge to carry on their |
---|
41 | 42 | | legacies and remain steadfast in our commitment to our country, our |
---|
42 | 43 | | neighbors, and our character; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
44 | 45 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Patriot Day 2022 on the 21st |
---|
45 | 46 | | anniversary of these attacks and honor with our memories and our |
---|
46 | 47 | | actions those who were injured and those who died in the |
---|
47 | 48 | | September 11 attacks. |
