5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Lynn County lost an admired public servant with the |

6 | 7 | | death of Sheriff Abraham Vega on July 11, 2020, at the age of 48; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Abraham Martin Vega was born in Brownfield to |

8 | 9 | | Abelardo Vega and Rachel Corona-Saldana on November 7, 1971, and he |
---|
9 | 10 | | grew up with two siblings, Mark and Felicia; he was the proud father |
---|
10 | 11 | | of two children, Marcus and Cori, and in 2018, he married Rachel |
---|
11 | 12 | | Curry, becoming the stepfather to Kaitlyn and Curry Lehman; he was |
---|
12 | 13 | | also blessed with a granddaughter, Emori; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, After graduating from Tahoka High School in 1990, |
---|
14 | 15 | | Mr. Vega joined the Lynn County Sheriff's Office as a part-time |
---|
15 | 16 | | dispatcher at the age of 19, working his way up to become the jail |
---|
16 | 17 | | administrator; in 1994, he graduated from the South Plains |
---|
17 | 18 | | Association of Governments law enforcement academy, and he went on |
---|
18 | 19 | | to become a patrolman for the Tahoka Police Department, a Lynn |
---|
19 | 20 | | County deputy sheriff, and the Tahoka Independent School District's |
---|
20 | 21 | | first police chief; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Vega returned to the Lynn County Sheriff's |
---|
22 | 23 | | Office in 2001, serving as lieutenant and chief deputy before |
---|
23 | 24 | | winning election as county sheriff and taking office in January |
---|
24 | 25 | | 2017; he was licensed as a telecommunicator, jailer, instructor, |
---|
25 | 26 | | and master peace officer by the Texas Commission on Law |
---|
26 | 27 | | Enforcement, and as a leading member of the Texas Chief Deputies |
---|
27 | 28 | | Association, he sat on several committees and the board of |
---|
28 | 29 | | directors before serving as TCDA president from 2016 to 2017; he was |
---|
29 | 30 | | also a member of the Cold Case Review Team of the Sheriffs' |
---|
30 | 31 | | Association of Texas, the Texas Jail Association, and the Caprock |
---|
31 | 32 | | Peace Officers' Association; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his professional achievements, |

33 | 34 | | Mr. Vega found time to serve two terms on the Tahoka ISD board of |
---|
34 | 35 | | trustees, and he was also active with Little League and Little |
---|
35 | 36 | | Dribblers; he volunteered as a sports photographer for the Lynn |
---|
36 | 37 | | County News, taking thousands of photographs over the course of |
---|
37 | 38 | | more than a decade; and |
---|
38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, A dedicated law enforcement professional, Abraham |
---|
39 | 40 | | Vega devoted himself to serving the community he loved, and he |
---|
40 | 41 | | leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all those who |
---|
41 | 42 | | were fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Sheriff Abraham |
---|
44 | 45 | | Vega and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and many friends; |
