| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |

| 6 | 7 | | 87th Texas Legislature are pleased to recognize Hill County and to |

| 7 | 8 | | honor its residents for the important contributions they are making |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | to the Lone Star State; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Located in North Central Texas east of the Brazos |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | River, Hill County was created from a section of Navarro County by |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | an act of the state legislature on February 7, 1853; it was named |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | for Dr. George Washington Hill, a member of the Congress of the |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Republic of Texas and secretary of war and navy under President Sam |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Houston; on May 14, 1853, an election was held in Lexington on |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | Jack's Branch to determine the county's first public officials, and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | later that same year, Hillsboro was platted and designated the |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | county seat; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Now home to more than 36,000 people, Hill County has |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | grown with the changing times while still maintaining its rural |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | appeal; the restored county courthouse in Hillsboro, which is |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | listed in the National Register of Historic Places, serves as the |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | center for county business; additionally, Hill College provides |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | access to an array of high tech academic and workforce training |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | educational programs, presents a popular performing arts series, |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | and is the site of the Texas Heritage Museum with its extensive |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | collection of Audie Murphy artifacts and an impressive library and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | archive on the Civil War; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Of special interest to Texas music fans everywhere, |

| 29 | 30 | | Hill County is the birthplace of legendary singer and songwriter |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | Willie Nelson, who was born in Abbott and graduated from high school |

| 31 | 32 | | there; and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Hill County communities host a number of special |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | events each year, among them the Hill County Fair and the Cotton |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | Pickin' Fair in Hillsboro and Pioneer Days in Whitney, and these |

| 35 | 36 | | festivities showcase the county's hospitality, agricultural roots, |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | scenic beauty, and heritage; residents and visitors alike also |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | enjoy the myriad recreational opportunities offered by Lake Whitney |

| 38 | 39 | | State Park; and |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Even as they celebrate their rich history, the |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | hardworking citizens of Hill County are looking ahead to the |
|---|
| 41 | 42 | | opportunities of the future, and their history and achievements are |
|---|
| 42 | 43 | | indeed deserving of commendation; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|---|
| 44 | 45 | | Legislature hereby recognize Hill County and extend to its |
|---|
| 45 | 46 | | residents sincere best wishes for the future. |
