| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |

| 6 | 7 | | 87th Texas Legislature are pleased to recognize Navarro County and |

| 7 | 8 | | to honor its residents for the important contributions they are |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | making to the Lone Star State; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Established with the approval of the state |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | legislature on April 25, 1846, Navarro County was named after José |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Antonio Navarro, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence; |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | two years later, a 100-acre plot of land was donated for the |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | creation of a county seat, with the name, Corsicana, chosen by |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Navarro to honor his father's birthplace on the isle of Corsica; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The community developed as a trading and shipping |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | center after the completion of the Houston and Texas Central |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Railroad in 1871; substantial population growth followed, and an |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | effort was made to drill for groundwater; this drilling led to the |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | discovery of oil, and consequently, the first oil boom in the state |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | of Texas, and it forever changed the economy and destiny of Navarro |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | County; more than 200 million barrels of oil have since been pumped |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | from the county, which claims the longest continuous oil flow in |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | Texas history; and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Today, petroleum, diversified manufacturing, and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | agriculture continue to bolster the economy; among the varied crops |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | grown in the region's fertile black loam are corn, cotton, wheat, |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | sorghum, and sunflowers, and local ranches raise beef cattle, dairy |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | cows, and horses; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Residents of the area benefit from the educational |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | opportunities provided by Navarro College and the recreational |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | activities found at Navarro Mills Lake, Lake Halbert, and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | Richland-Chambers Reservoir; in addition, the county's fascinating |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | history is preserved at such attractions as the Pearce Museum, the |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | Glenn Cumbie Museum of Aviation and Military History, and Pioneer |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | Village; and |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, With a colorful history, an abundance of natural |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | resources, and an inviting atmosphere, Navarro County is a |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | desirable community in which to live and work, and its residents may |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | indeed take great pride in the place they call home; now, therefore, |

| 41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
|---|
| 42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby recognize Navarro County and extend to its |
|---|
| 43 | 44 | | citizens sincere best wishes for the future. |
