45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
67 87th Texas Legislature are pleased to recognize Navarro County and
78 to honor its residents for the important contributions they are
89 making to the Lone Star State; and
910 WHEREAS, Established with the approval of the state
1011 legislature on April 25, 1846, Navarro County was named after José
1112 Antonio Navarro, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence;
1213 two years later, a 100-acre plot of land was donated for the
1314 creation of a county seat, with the name, Corsicana, chosen by
1415 Navarro to honor his father's birthplace on the isle of Corsica; and
1516 WHEREAS, The community developed as a trading and shipping
1617 center after the completion of the Houston and Texas Central
1718 Railroad in 1871; substantial population growth followed, and an
1819 effort was made to drill for groundwater; this drilling led to the
1920 discovery of oil, and consequently, the first oil boom in the state
2021 of Texas, and it forever changed the economy and destiny of Navarro
2122 County; more than 200 million barrels of oil have since been pumped
2223 from the county, which claims the longest continuous oil flow in
2324 Texas history; and
2425 WHEREAS, Today, petroleum, diversified manufacturing, and
2526 agriculture continue to bolster the economy; among the varied crops
2627 grown in the region's fertile black loam are corn, cotton, wheat,
2728 sorghum, and sunflowers, and local ranches raise beef cattle, dairy
2829 cows, and horses; and
2930 WHEREAS, Residents of the area benefit from the educational
3031 opportunities provided by Navarro College and the recreational
3132 activities found at Navarro Mills Lake, Lake Halbert, and
3233 Richland-Chambers Reservoir; in addition, the county's fascinating
3334 history is preserved at such attractions as the Pearce Museum, the
3435 Glenn Cumbie Museum of Aviation and Military History, and Pioneer
3536 Village; and
3637 WHEREAS, With a colorful history, an abundance of natural
3738 resources, and an inviting atmosphere, Navarro County is a
3839 desirable community in which to live and work, and its residents may
3940 indeed take great pride in the place they call home; now, therefore,
4041 be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby recognize Navarro County and extend to its
4344 citizens sincere best wishes for the future.
