45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, April is Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month, and
67 this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to promote better
78 understanding of this health issue; and
89 WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is a progressive brain disorder
910 that leads to shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with walking and
1011 talking; the disease can also be accompanied by mental and
1112 behavioral changes, such as sleep problems, depression,
1213 forgetfulness, and fatigue; and
1314 WHEREAS, According to the Parkinson's Foundation, more than
1415 50,000 Texans age 45 and older have the disease, and in El Paso, an
1516 estimated 2,300 people are living with Parkinson's; it is second
1617 only to Alzheimer's as the most common neurodegenerative disorder;
1718 and
1819 WHEREAS, Although more work remains to be done in identifying
1920 the causes of the disease and developing a cure, a number of
2021 treatments are available to help alleviate symptoms, including
2122 medications, surgical procedures, and various therapies; and
2223 WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is a serious and life-changing
2324 disorder, and the observance of Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month
2425 unites people around the world in their commitment to improve the
2526 quality of life for those fighting the disease; now, therefore, be
2627 it
2728 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
2829 Legislature hereby recognize April 2021 as Parkinson's Disease
2930 Awareness Month and urge all Texans to learn more about the
3031 disorder.
