5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Jin-Ya Huang of Dallas has received a 2021 Maura |

6 | 7 | | Women Helping Women Award from the Texas Women's Foundation; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, In her early teens, Ms. Huang came to the United |

8 | 9 | | States from Taipei, Taiwan; she grew up watching her mother, |

9 | 10 | | Margaret Huang, teach other immigrants cooking and job skills in |
---|
10 | 11 | | the family restaurant; after graduating from The University of |
---|
11 | 12 | | Texas at Dallas, Ms. Huang embarked on a successful career as an art |
---|
12 | 13 | | director and packaging manager for major retailers, but the death |
---|
13 | 14 | | of her mother changed her trajectory; she honored her memory by |
---|
14 | 15 | | launching a catering company, Break Bread, Break Borders, that |
---|
15 | 16 | | offers refugee women opportunities for on-the-job training, |
---|
16 | 17 | | certifications, and mentoring from culinary and business |

17 | 18 | | professionals; and |

18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The company also seeks to change perspectives, build |

19 | 20 | | meaningful social connections, and amplify the voices of people of |

20 | 21 | | color; refugee women work with veteran chefs to create menus based |

21 | 22 | | on authentic recipes from their home countries, and at catered |
---|
22 | 23 | | events, they share their stories and culture with diners, in |

23 | 24 | | addition to their culinary talents; during the pandemic, BBBB began |

24 | 25 | | assisting refugees with short-term needs as well; and |

25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, A current fellow of the Presidential Leadership |

26 | 27 | | Scholars Program, Ms. Huang is active in many civic organizations; |

27 | 28 | | she serves on the advisory boards of the OpEd Project, Dallas Museum |

28 | 29 | | of Art Learning and Engagement Committee, and the LiftFund; |

29 | 30 | | moreover, she has earned acclaim as an interdisciplinary artist |

30 | 31 | | focusing on Asian identity and diasporic immigrant experience; and |

31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Jin-Ya Huang is making a positive difference in the |

32 | 33 | | lives of refugee women and in the wider community as the founder of |

33 | 34 | | Break Bread, Break Borders, and she is indeed deserving of this |

34 | 35 | | prestigious accolade; now, therefore, be it |

35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Jin-Ya Huang on her receipt of a |
