| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Eulalio Garza and Eva Ybarra Garza, |

| 9 | 10 | | Maria "Cuca" Cantu was born on July 4, 1954, in Charlotte and grew |

| 10 | 11 | | up with six siblings, Pedro, Marcos, Lucy, Martha, Patty, and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Victoria; and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Active in her community, Ms. Cantu was a dedicated |

| 13 | 14 | | member of the Charlotte Independent School District board of |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | trustees for more than 18 years, serving from 1998 to 2016; she held |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | a number of leadership positions over the course of her tenure, |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | including the office of board president; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Ms. Cantu enjoyed the love and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | support of her husband, Jesus, with whom she shared 45 years of |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | marriage before his passing; she took great pride in her children, |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Jesus, Richard, Elizabeth, and Angela, and with the passing years, |

| 21 | 22 | | she had the pleasure of seeing her family grow to include four |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | grandchildren, Tony, Tyler, Roque, and Jessica, and two |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | great-grandchildren, Jezzlyn and Adelina; and |

| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Deeply devoted to her family and her community, Cuca |

| 25 | 26 | | Cantu made a meaningful difference in the lives of her loved ones |

| 26 | 27 | | and fellow citizens alike, and her contributions will be fondly |

| 27 | 28 | | remembered for years to come; now, therefore, be it |

| 28 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 29 | 30 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Maria Refugia Cantu |
