5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The city of El Paso lost a gifted musician and |

6 | 7 | | educator with the death of Dr. Lucy Scarbrough on June 13, 2020, at |

7 | 8 | | the age of 92; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of New Mexico, the former Lucy Therese |
---|
9 | 10 | | Ardans studied piano at the American Conservatory of Music in |
---|
10 | 11 | | Chicago, where she earned numerous prizes and awards, and went on to |
---|
11 | 12 | | teach at Chicago Musical College and perform as a soloist with the |
---|
12 | 13 | | Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Evanston Symphony Orchestra; she |
---|
13 | 14 | | married Paul Scarbrough, and the couple shared many rewarding years |
---|
14 | 15 | | together before his passing in 2009; they first settled in |
---|
15 | 16 | | Albuquerque, where Dr. Scarbrough taught at St. Pius X High School, |
---|
16 | 17 | | established the Albuquerque Interparochial Choir, and served as |
---|
17 | 18 | | music director of the Albuquerque Light Opera Company; the couple |
---|
18 | 19 | | became the proud parents of four children, Paul, Mark, Sue Ann, and |
---|
19 | 20 | | Ginger, and through the years, Dr. Scarbrough was further blessed |

20 | 21 | | with nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and |

21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Scarbrough and her family eventually moved to El |

22 | 23 | | Paso, where she spent the rest of her life; she was active as a |
---|
23 | 24 | | musical theater director, as the accompanist for the Antonio Triana |
---|
24 | 25 | | Flamenco Troupe, as the organist for St. Matthew Catholic Parish |
---|
25 | 26 | | and St. Patrick Cathedral, and as a founder of Opera a la Carte, |
---|
26 | 27 | | which eventually became the El Paso Opera Company; she was also |
---|
27 | 28 | | associated for many years with El Paso Community College, where she |
---|
28 | 29 | | touched the lives of thousands of students in the classroom and |
---|
29 | 30 | | established the EPCC Arts Festival, the El Paso Civic Orchestra, |
---|
30 | 31 | | and the El Paso Chopin Piano Festival; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Throughout her career, Dr. Scarbrough was highly |
---|
32 | 33 | | acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for her powerful |
---|
33 | 34 | | performances at the piano, and she was recognized for her artistic |
---|
34 | 35 | | contributions by the president of the United States, the governor |
---|
35 | 36 | | of Texas, and the Vatican; her accolades include the Minnie Stevens |
---|
36 | 37 | | Piper Professor Award, the Burlington Resources Foundation |
---|
37 | 38 | | Teaching Award, the Hispanic Heritage Award, and the National |
---|
38 | 39 | | Teaching Excellence Award from The University of Texas at Austin, |
---|
39 | 40 | | among many others; and |
---|
40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Lucy Scarbrough lived a rich and purposeful life |
---|
41 | 42 | | dedicated to sharing the gift of music, and she leaves behind a |

42 | 43 | | legacy of achievement, artistry, and civic engagement that her |
---|
43 | 44 | | loved ones can remember with pride; now, therefore, be it |

44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
45 | 46 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Lucy Therese |
---|
46 | 47 | | Scarbrough and extend heartfelt sympathy to her relatives and many |
---|
47 | 48 | | friends; and, be it further |

48 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

49 | 50 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |

50 | 51 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Lucy |
