45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The city of El Paso lost a gifted musician and
67 educator with the death of Dr. Lucy Scarbrough on June 13, 2020, at
78 the age of 92; and
89 WHEREAS, A native of New Mexico, the former Lucy Therese
910 Ardans studied piano at the American Conservatory of Music in
1011 Chicago, where she earned numerous prizes and awards, and went on to
1112 teach at Chicago Musical College and perform as a soloist with the
1213 Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Evanston Symphony Orchestra; she
1314 married Paul Scarbrough, and the couple shared many rewarding years
1415 together before his passing in 2009; they first settled in
1516 Albuquerque, where Dr. Scarbrough taught at St. Pius X High School,
1617 established the Albuquerque Interparochial Choir, and served as
1718 music director of the Albuquerque Light Opera Company; the couple
1819 became the proud parents of four children, Paul, Mark, Sue Ann, and
1920 Ginger, and through the years, Dr. Scarbrough was further blessed
2021 with nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and
2122 WHEREAS, Dr. Scarbrough and her family eventually moved to El
2223 Paso, where she spent the rest of her life; she was active as a
2324 musical theater director, as the accompanist for the Antonio Triana
2425 Flamenco Troupe, as the organist for St. Matthew Catholic Parish
2526 and St. Patrick Cathedral, and as a founder of Opera a la Carte,
2627 which eventually became the El Paso Opera Company; she was also
2728 associated for many years with El Paso Community College, where she
2829 touched the lives of thousands of students in the classroom and
2930 established the EPCC Arts Festival, the El Paso Civic Orchestra,
3031 and the El Paso Chopin Piano Festival; and
3132 WHEREAS, Throughout her career, Dr. Scarbrough was highly
3233 acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for her powerful
3334 performances at the piano, and she was recognized for her artistic
3435 contributions by the president of the United States, the governor
3536 of Texas, and the Vatican; her accolades include the Minnie Stevens
3637 Piper Professor Award, the Burlington Resources Foundation
3738 Teaching Award, the Hispanic Heritage Award, and the National
3839 Teaching Excellence Award from The University of Texas at Austin,
3940 among many others; and
4041 WHEREAS, Lucy Scarbrough lived a rich and purposeful life
4142 dedicated to sharing the gift of music, and she leaves behind a
4243 legacy of achievement, artistry, and civic engagement that her
4344 loved ones can remember with pride; now, therefore, be it
4445 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4546 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Lucy Therese
4647 Scarbrough and extend heartfelt sympathy to her relatives and many
4748 friends; and, be it further
4849 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4950 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5051 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Lucy
5152 Scarbrough.
