| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Cooke County lost a dedicated public |

| 6 | 7 | | servant with the death of former county sheriff John S. Aston of |

| 7 | 8 | | Gainesville on May 19, 2021, at the age of 82; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, John Aston was born in Reliance, Virginia, on May |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | 26, 1938, to Elizabeth and Verna Aston, and he moved to Texas in |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | 1957; he was joined in marriage to Phyllis Holley-Aston in 1960, and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | the couple shared a loving union until her death in 2005; he was the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | proud father of two sons, Jeff and Keith, and later in life he was |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | blessed with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Aston began his long career in public service by |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | working for the engineering department of the Texas Highway |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Department from 1960 until 1968, when he moved into law |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | enforcement; from 1968 to 1993, he served with the Cooke County |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Sheriff's Office, including nine years as sheriff from 1983 to |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | 1992; he went on to work in the Denton County Sheriff's Office as a |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | sergeant until his retirement in 2005; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, A devoted family man and a respected peace officer, |

| 22 | 23 | | John Aston lived a life made rich through meaningful service, and he |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | will be deeply missed by all those who held him dear; now, |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | therefore, be it |

| 25 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 26 | 27 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John S. Aston and |
