55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, People across the United States were deeply saddened
77 by the tragic death of United States Capitol Police officer Brian
88 David Sicknick, who lost his life on January 7, 2021, at the age of
99 42, from injuries he sustained while attempting to repel a violent
1010 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol; and
1111 WHEREAS, Officer Sicknick was one of a brave group of law
1212 enforcement officers who sought to hold back the rioters who
1313 stormed the Capitol on January 6 in their effort to disrupt the
1414 certification of electoral votes and the peaceful transition of
1515 executive power; through his heroic actions at the cost of his own
1616 life, he helped keep the legislators and staff who were occupying
1717 the building out of harm's way and prevented the shocking events of
1818 that day from escalating into an even greater tragedy; and
1919 WHEREAS, Born on July 30, 1978, in New Brunswick, New Jersey,
2020 Brian David Sicknick was the son of Gladys and Charles Sicknick, and
2121 he grew up in South River with the companionship of two older
2222 brothers, Ken and Craig; after graduating from Middlesex County's
2323 Vocational & Technical High School in 1996, he enlisted in the New
2424 Jersey Air National Guard as a traditional drilling guardsman; he
2525 served as a fire team member and leader with the 108th Security
2626 Forces Squadron, 108th Wing, stationed in New Jersey, and he
2727 deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1999 and to Kyrgyzstan in 2003, before
2828 being honorably discharged; and
2929 WHEREAS, Officer Sicknick embraced his calling as a public
3030 servant and joined the U.S. Capitol Police in July 2008; he was
3131 assigned to the federal agency's mountain bike unit and tasked with
3232 patrolling the grounds of the U.S. Capitol Complex to ensure the
3333 safety of members of Congress, staff, and visitors; along the way,
3434 he resumed his education to further his career, obtaining a
3535 bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of
3636 Phoenix in 2013; and
3737 WHEREAS, Brian Sicknick embodied the highest ideals of his
3838 profession, and his heroism and sacrifice will forever be
3939 remembered by his fellow Americans; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4141 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of United States Capitol
4242 Police Officer Brian David Sicknick and extend heartfelt
4343 condolences to his family, his friends, and his colleagues; and, be
4444 it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4747 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Brian David
4848 Sicknick.
