6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, People across the United States were deeply saddened |
---|
7 | 7 | | by the tragic death of United States Capitol Police officer Brian |
---|
8 | 8 | | David Sicknick, who lost his life on January 7, 2021, at the age of |
---|
9 | 9 | | 42, from injuries he sustained while attempting to repel a violent |
---|
10 | 10 | | insurrection at the U.S. Capitol; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Officer Sicknick was one of a brave group of law |
---|
12 | 12 | | enforcement officers who sought to hold back the rioters who |
---|
13 | 13 | | stormed the Capitol on January 6 in their effort to disrupt the |
---|
14 | 14 | | certification of electoral votes and the peaceful transition of |
---|
15 | 15 | | executive power; through his heroic actions at the cost of his own |
---|
16 | 16 | | life, he helped keep the legislators and staff who were occupying |
---|
17 | 17 | | the building out of harm's way and prevented the shocking events of |
---|
18 | 18 | | that day from escalating into an even greater tragedy; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Born on July 30, 1978, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, |
---|
20 | 20 | | Brian David Sicknick was the son of Gladys and Charles Sicknick, and |
---|
21 | 21 | | he grew up in South River with the companionship of two older |
---|
22 | 22 | | brothers, Ken and Craig; after graduating from Middlesex County's |
---|
23 | 23 | | Vocational & Technical High School in 1996, he enlisted in the New |
---|
24 | 24 | | Jersey Air National Guard as a traditional drilling guardsman; he |
---|
25 | 25 | | served as a fire team member and leader with the 108th Security |
---|
26 | 26 | | Forces Squadron, 108th Wing, stationed in New Jersey, and he |
---|
27 | 27 | | deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1999 and to Kyrgyzstan in 2003, before |
---|
28 | 28 | | being honorably discharged; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Officer Sicknick embraced his calling as a public |
---|
30 | 30 | | servant and joined the U.S. Capitol Police in July 2008; he was |
---|
31 | 31 | | assigned to the federal agency's mountain bike unit and tasked with |
---|
32 | 32 | | patrolling the grounds of the U.S. Capitol Complex to ensure the |
---|
33 | 33 | | safety of members of Congress, staff, and visitors; along the way, |
---|
34 | 34 | | he resumed his education to further his career, obtaining a |
---|
35 | 35 | | bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of |
---|
36 | 36 | | Phoenix in 2013; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Brian Sicknick embodied the highest ideals of his |
---|
38 | 38 | | profession, and his heroism and sacrifice will forever be |
---|
39 | 39 | | remembered by his fellow Americans; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of United States Capitol |
---|
42 | 42 | | Police Officer Brian David Sicknick and extend heartfelt |
---|
43 | 43 | | condolences to his family, his friends, and his colleagues; and, be |
---|
44 | 44 | | it further |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
46 | 46 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
47 | 47 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Brian David |
---|
48 | 48 | | Sicknick. |
