45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed attorney drew to a close with
67 the death of Nathan Butler Schattman on December 28, 2020, at the
78 age of 50; and
89 WHEREAS, Born on July 20, 1970, to Michael D. Schattman and
910 Mary Ellen Brannigan Schattman, Nathan Schattman was party to a
1011 precedent-setting legal case even before his birth; after his
1112 mother was fired for being pregnant with him, she sued to regain her
1213 job, and with the help of ACLU lawyer and future Supreme Court
1314 justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the case helped result in a new legal
1415 standard, making it illegal to fire a woman for pregnancy; and
1516 WHEREAS, A 1987 graduate of Nolan Catholic High School,
1617 Mr. Schattman earned his bachelor's degree from Georgetown
1718 University in 1991 and his law degree from The University of Texas
1819 at Austin School of Law in 1994; he was sworn into the State Bar of
1920 Texas by his father, Judge Schattman, and he began his legal career
2021 by serving as briefing attorney for the chief justice of the Second
2122 Court of Appeals in Fort Worth; recognized as a top attorney five
2223 times by Fort Worth magazine and as a rising star in Texas Monthly,
2324 he enjoyed a successful career as a corporate litigator and a labor
2425 and employment lawyer, most recently for Brown, Proctor & Howell,
2526 LLP; and
2627 WHEREAS, Mr. Schattman was a loving brother to his sisters,
2728 Virginia and Rita, and a devoted uncle to his nieces and nephew,
2829 Rachel, Amy, Eliza, and Bret; he was active in Democratic politics,
2930 and he was a loyal fan of the Georgetown University Hoyas and The
3031 University of Texas Longhorns; he delighted in the time he spent
3132 traveling to Portugal and Brazil, and he also enjoyed golfing,
3233 science fiction, and Irish whiskey; and
3334 WHEREAS, Nathan Schattman lived a life that was rich in
3435 personal and professional achievements, and he will forever be a
3536 source of inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be
3637 it
3738 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3839 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Nathan Butler
3940 Schattman and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and many
4041 friends; and, be it further
4142 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4243 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4344 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Nathan
4445 Butler Schattman.
