5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed attorney drew to a close with |

6 | 7 | | the death of Nathan Butler Schattman on December 28, 2020, at the |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born on July 20, 1970, to Michael D. Schattman and |
---|
9 | 10 | | Mary Ellen Brannigan Schattman, Nathan Schattman was party to a |
---|
10 | 11 | | precedent-setting legal case even before his birth; after his |
---|
11 | 12 | | mother was fired for being pregnant with him, she sued to regain her |
---|
12 | 13 | | job, and with the help of ACLU lawyer and future Supreme Court |
---|
13 | 14 | | justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the case helped result in a new legal |
---|
14 | 15 | | standard, making it illegal to fire a woman for pregnancy; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, A 1987 graduate of Nolan Catholic High School, |
---|
16 | 17 | | Mr. Schattman earned his bachelor's degree from Georgetown |
---|
17 | 18 | | University in 1991 and his law degree from The University of Texas |
---|
18 | 19 | | at Austin School of Law in 1994; he was sworn into the State Bar of |
---|
19 | 20 | | Texas by his father, Judge Schattman, and he began his legal career |
---|
20 | 21 | | by serving as briefing attorney for the chief justice of the Second |
---|
21 | 22 | | Court of Appeals in Fort Worth; recognized as a top attorney five |
---|
22 | 23 | | times by Fort Worth magazine and as a rising star in Texas Monthly, |
---|
23 | 24 | | he enjoyed a successful career as a corporate litigator and a labor |
---|
24 | 25 | | and employment lawyer, most recently for Brown, Proctor & Howell, |

25 | 26 | | LLP; and |
---|
26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Schattman was a loving brother to his sisters, |
---|
27 | 28 | | Virginia and Rita, and a devoted uncle to his nieces and nephew, |

28 | 29 | | Rachel, Amy, Eliza, and Bret; he was active in Democratic politics, |
---|
29 | 30 | | and he was a loyal fan of the Georgetown University Hoyas and The |

30 | 31 | | University of Texas Longhorns; he delighted in the time he spent |

31 | 32 | | traveling to Portugal and Brazil, and he also enjoyed golfing, |
---|
32 | 33 | | science fiction, and Irish whiskey; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Nathan Schattman lived a life that was rich in |
---|
34 | 35 | | personal and professional achievements, and he will forever be a |
---|
35 | 36 | | source of inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be |
---|

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Nathan Butler |

39 | 40 | | Schattman and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and many |

40 | 41 | | friends; and, be it further |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
