| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, January 13, 2021, marks the 108th anniversary of the |

| 6 | 7 | | founding of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and this occasion |

| 7 | 8 | | provides a fitting opportunity to reflect on the organization's |

| 8 | 9 | | rich history and many notable achievements; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta traces its origins to 1913, when |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | 22 charter members established the sorority at Howard University in |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Washington, D.C., as a means of promoting academic excellence and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | community service; that same year, the group took its first public |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | action, participating in a march for women's suffrage in the |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | nation's capital; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Residents of the Lone Star State have played a |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | prominent role in Delta Sigma Theta since the beginning; among the |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | sorority's founders were four women from Texas: Zephyr Chisom |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Carter of El Paso, Jessie McGuire Dent of Galveston, Frederica |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Chase Dodd of Dallas, and Myra Davis Hemmings of Gonzales; through |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | the years, a multitude of other Texans have joined the group's |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | membership, including such important figures as Texas State Senator |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | and U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Jordan and Texas State |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | Representative Ruth Jones McClendon; and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Today, Delta Sigma Theta's strong presence in Texas |

| 25 | 26 | | extends to 46 alumnae and 28 collegiate chapters; these groups |

| 26 | 27 | | promote the sorority's "Five-Point Programmatic Thrust" by working |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | to further economic development, international awareness, |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | political involvement, physical and mental health, and educational |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | development; that same mission inspires Delta Sigma Theta sorors |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | around the globe, with more than 250,000 people holding membership |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | in the United States, Canada, and numerous other nations and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | territories; and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, For more than a century, the members of Delta Sigma |

| 34 | 35 | | Theta have worked to improve the lives of their fellow citizens, and |

| 35 | 36 | | they are indeed deserving of recognition for their invaluable |

| 36 | 37 | | contributions; now, therefore, be it |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby recognize January 13, 2021, as Delta Sigma Theta |

| 39 | 40 | | Sorority, Inc., Day in Texas and extend to the organization's |

| 40 | 41 | | members sincere best wishes as they celebrate the group's 108th |

| 41 | 42 | | anniversary; and, be it further |
