| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A life dedicated to public service drew to a close |

| 6 | 7 | | with the death of former Brooks County Sheriff Ruben M. Longoria on |

| 7 | 8 | | April 9, 2020, at the age of 85; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Ruben Longoria was born in Falfurrias in 1934 to |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Maximiliano and Celia Longoria, and he grew up with two brothers, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Robert and Rey; he shared 47 rewarding years of marriage with his |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | wife, Mary, and he was the proud father of eight children, Rudy, |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Linda, Ruben, Ricky, John, Joseph, Robert, and Max; later in life, |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | he was pleased to welcome into his family 33 grandchildren, 28 |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1967, Mr. Longoria embarked on a remarkable |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | career in law enforcement that spanned more than half a century, |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | starting with the Corpus Christi Police Department; returning to |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | his hometown to be closer to his mother after the death of his |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | father, he joined the Falfurrias Police Department, rising from |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | patrolman to chief of police; in 1993, he was elected as the sheriff |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | of Brooks County, which he considered the pinnacle of his career; |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | following his service as sheriff, he continued to work as a |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | constable until his retirement in 2019; and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, A proud son of Brooks County, Mr. Longoria delighted |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | in drinking coffee and telling stories with his friends in the |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | morning, tending to his animals in the afternoon, and spending time |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | with his family in the evenings; whether he was on duty or off, he |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | made an iconic impression with his polished boots, neatly pressed |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | shirt, and white cowboy hat; and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, A devoted family man and a well-respected peace |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | officer, Ruben Longoria lived a full and generous life, and he |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | leaves behind a legacy of compassion, kindness, and service to |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | others that will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved |

| 34 | 35 | | him; now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Ruben M. Longoria |
