| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt by |

| 6 | 7 | | the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Ismael Z. Chavez of |

| 7 | 8 | | the McAllen Police Department, who was killed in the line of duty on |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | July 11, 2020, at the age of 38; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Ismael Chavez was born in McAllen on October 19, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | 1981, to Ismael and Cynthia Chavez; he grew up with three siblings, |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Maru, Chiara, and Gladys, and he was fondly known as "Smiley" to his |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | circle of loved ones, which also included his nephew, Matthew, his |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | niece, Valeria, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; a |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | member of the Class of 2000 at Edinburg High School, he went on to |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | graduate from The University of Texas at San Antonio; he was |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | employed for around 10 years as a science teacher and coach at |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Weslaco East High School, where he used humor to engage students in |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | the classroom; and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Pursuing his longtime goal of working in law |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | enforcement, Mr. Chavez joined the McAllen Police Department and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | graduated from its police academy in 2018; he was a devoted public |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | servant, and his efforts furthered the agency's mission of serving |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | and protecting the community during his time on the force; over the |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | course of his tenure, he was actively involved with the McAllen |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Police Association and the McAllen First Responders Guns and Hoses |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Foundation; Officer Chavez drew strength in all his endeavors from |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | his deep and abiding faith; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Ismael Chavez was a brave and dedicated officer, a |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | loving son, brother, and uncle, and a man whose kind and generous |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | nature enriched the lives of everyone around him, and he will |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | forever hold a special place in the hearts of those he leaves |

| 32 | 33 | | behind; now, therefore, be it |

| 33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Officer Ismael |

| 35 | 36 | | Z. Chavez and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his |
