45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Magic Valley Electric Cooperative has played a vital
67 role in the lives of Rio Grande Valley residents for more than eight
78 decades, and its crews went to commendable lengths to restore power
89 to area households in the wake of Hurricane Hanna; and
910 WHEREAS, The storm made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on
1011 Padre Island on July 25, 2020, bringing winds of up to 90 miles per
1112 hour and inundating parts of South Texas with over 15 inches of
1213 rain; disaster declarations were issued in 32 counties, and as a
1314 result of downed power lines and other infrastructure damage, tens
1415 of thousands of outages were reported in Corpus Christi, Laredo,
1516 and the Rio Grande Valley; and
1617 WHEREAS, At the peak of the outages, more than 75,000 Magic
1718 Valley Electric Cooperative members, a majority of the
1819 organization's patrons, were without power; in the week that
1920 followed, MVEC deployed linemen to neighborhoods that received
2021 storm damage, and through their diligent efforts, electricity was
2122 restored to almost all of those affected within days of the
2223 hurricane; and
2324 WHEREAS, Founded by a group of local farmers and ranchers in
2425 1937, MVEC is an independent not-for-profit member-owned
2526 organization; it has long been an integral part of the community,
2627 and it is today a reliable source of electric power to over 125,000
2728 member accounts in seven counties; and
2829 WHEREAS, After nearly a century in the Rio Grande Valley,
2930 Magic Valley Electric Cooperative continues to further its
3031 reputation for excellence, and the professionals who were part of
3132 its Hurricane Hanna recovery team are to be commended for their
3233 dedicated efforts; now, therefore, be it
3334 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3435 Legislature hereby honor Magic Valley Electric Cooperative for its
3536 outstanding work to restore service to its members in the aftermath
3637 of Hurricane Hanna and that all those affiliated with the
3738 organization be extended sincere best wishes for continued success;
3839 and, be it further
3940 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4041 prepared for Magic Valley Electric Cooperative as an expression of
4142 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
