5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |

6 | 7 | | a close with the passing of John A. Lopez of Mission on July 20, |

7 | 8 | | 2020, at the age of 65; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of Mission, Johnny Lopez was born to |
---|
9 | 10 | | Fernando and Sila Lopez on October 20, 1954, and he grew up with the |
---|
10 | 11 | | companionship of two older brothers; following his graduation from |
---|
11 | 12 | | Mission High School in 1972, he continued his education at The |
---|
12 | 13 | | University of Texas-Pan American, where he earned a bachelor's |
---|
13 | 14 | | degree in kinesiology and was a member of Phi Kappa Theta |
---|
14 | 15 | | fraternity; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Lopez initially worked as a teacher and coach at |
---|
16 | 17 | | Brewster School in the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School |
---|
17 | 18 | | District; in 1978, he transitioned to a career in law enforcement |
---|
18 | 19 | | and joined the U.S. Border Patrol, serving at stations in |
---|
19 | 20 | | Harlingen, Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Mercedes/Weslaco; he retired |
---|
20 | 21 | | in 2004 at the rank of patrol agent in charge, after a distinguished |
---|
21 | 22 | | tenure of 27 years; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Engaged in his community, Mr. Lopez served on the |
---|
23 | 24 | | City of Mission Housing Committee and as a board member for the |
---|
24 | 25 | | Shary Municipal Golf Course; moreover, he was a candidate for the |
---|
25 | 26 | | Mission City Council Place 2 seat at the time of his death; and |
---|
26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Lopez benefited from the |
---|
27 | 28 | | love and support of his wife, Otila, with whom he shared a rewarding |
---|
28 | 29 | | marriage that spanned more than four decades; he was the proud |
---|
29 | 30 | | father of three children, John, Jeannette, and Jaclyn, and he was |
---|
30 | 31 | | further blessed with two grandchildren, Joslyn and Khloe; a devoted |
---|
31 | 32 | | family man, he coached his children's sports teams when they were |
---|
32 | 33 | | young, and he went on to mentor his granddaughters in golf; in his |
---|
33 | 34 | | leisure hours, he enjoyed hunting; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, While his loss is difficult to bear, Johnny Lopez |
---|
35 | 36 | | leaves behind numerous friends and loved ones whose lives are far |
---|
36 | 37 | | richer for having known him, and he will always hold a treasured |
---|
37 | 38 | | place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John A. Lopez and |
---|
40 | 41 | | extend deepest condolences to all who mourn his passing; and, be it |
