45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Beloved teacher and band director Hector M. Cantu of
67 the San Diego Independent School District passed away in January
78 2021 at the age of 50; and
89 WHEREAS, The son of Eloy and Grace Cantu, Hector Cantu grew up
910 with a sister, Ilize; he developed a passion for music as a child,
1011 and he joined the marching band at Premont High School, where he
1112 graduated in 1989; inspired to pursue a teaching career, he was
1213 employed by Premont ISD for 15 years before transferring to San
1314 Diego ISD; for the past six years, he served that district as
1415 assistant band director and head mariachi director, and he was
1516 proud to see his mariachi students excel in contests and eventually
1617 triumph at the state level in 2020; and
1718 WHEREAS, Mr. Cantu had a warm rapport with all his students,
1819 who affectionately called him "Mr. Sir"; beloved for his smile, his
1920 jokes, and his unwavering support and encouragement, he was
2021 selected as the Amazing Teacher for May 2019; and
2122 WHEREAS, While working in Premont, Mr. Cantu met Melissa
2223 Hidalgo, a fellow teacher, and they exchanged wedding vows in March
2324 2020; in addition to his wife, Mr. Cantu was blessed with two sons,
2425 Jacob and Michael, and a daughter, Michelle; and
2526 WHEREAS, Hector Cantu had a positive and lasting influence in
2627 the lives of countless young Texans over the course of his career,
2728 and he will forever hold a special place in their hearts; now,
2829 therefore, be it
2930 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3031 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Hector M. Cantu and
3132 extend profound condolences to the members of his family: to his
3233 wife, Melissa Hidalgo; to his children, Jacob Elijah Cantu and his
3334 wife, Raelynn Pena, Michael Tamez, and Michelle Renee Cantu; to his
3435 parents, Eloy and Grace Cantu; to his sister, Ilize Shimel Cantu;
3536 and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
3637 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3738 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
3839 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Hector
3940 Cantu.
