| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Beloved teacher and band director Hector M. Cantu of |

| 6 | 7 | | the San Diego Independent School District passed away in January |

| 7 | 8 | | 2021 at the age of 50; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of Eloy and Grace Cantu, Hector Cantu grew up |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | with a sister, Ilize; he developed a passion for music as a child, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | and he joined the marching band at Premont High School, where he |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | graduated in 1989; inspired to pursue a teaching career, he was |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | employed by Premont ISD for 15 years before transferring to San |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Diego ISD; for the past six years, he served that district as |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | assistant band director and head mariachi director, and he was |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | proud to see his mariachi students excel in contests and eventually |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | triumph at the state level in 2020; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cantu had a warm rapport with all his students, |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | who affectionately called him "Mr. Sir"; beloved for his smile, his |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | jokes, and his unwavering support and encouragement, he was |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | selected as the Amazing Teacher for May 2019; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, While working in Premont, Mr. Cantu met Melissa |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Hidalgo, a fellow teacher, and they exchanged wedding vows in March |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | 2020; in addition to his wife, Mr. Cantu was blessed with two sons, |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Jacob and Michael, and a daughter, Michelle; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Hector Cantu had a positive and lasting influence in |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | the lives of countless young Texans over the course of his career, |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | and he will forever hold a special place in their hearts; now, |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | therefore, be it |

| 29 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 30 | 31 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Hector M. Cantu and |

| 31 | 32 | | extend profound condolences to the members of his family: to his |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | wife, Melissa Hidalgo; to his children, Jacob Elijah Cantu and his |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | wife, Raelynn Pena, Michael Tamez, and Michelle Renee Cantu; to his |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | parents, Eloy and Grace Cantu; to his sister, Ilize Shimel Cantu; |
