45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, From February 13-17, 2021, a historic winter storm
67 swept across the state and brought significant snowfall, freezing
78 rain, and sustained, below-freezing temperatures to the Central
89 Texas area; and
910 WHEREAS, The winter conditions resulted in blackouts that
1011 impacted nearly 200,000 Austin Energy homes and more throughout the
1112 Travis County area, forcing many Texans to contend with freezing
1213 weather without heat or electricity; as ice accumulated on
1314 roadways, some area residents were unable to obtain food or make
1415 trips for other essential items, and the record-low temperatures
1516 also led to frozen or burst pipes that left many without running
1617 water; and
1718 WHEREAS, During this unprecedented event, leaders and
1819 citizens of Central Texas stepped up to provide food, water, and
1920 other resources to community members in need; many of them were
2021 experiencing their own hardships at this time, and some braved
2122 dangerous road conditions in order to reach and render aid to their
2223 vulnerable neighbors; and
2324 WHEREAS, Among those who distinguished themselves in the
2425 midst of this crisis were students at The University of Texas School
2526 of Nursing, who coordinated relief efforts for elderly residents at
2627 the Cambridge Villas Senior Housing Apartments; and
2728 WHEREAS, Winter Storm Uri was a natural disaster of historic
2829 magnitude for our state, and Central Texans are profoundly grateful
2930 for the caring individuals who went above and beyond during this
3031 challenging time for their community; now, therefore, be it
3132 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3233 Legislature hereby honor students at The University of Texas School
3334 of Nursing for providing vital help to their neighbors during
3435 Winter Storm Uri and extend to them sincere appreciation for their
3536 hard work and selfless service; and, be it further
3637 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3738 prepared for the UT School of Nursing as an expression of high
3839 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
