45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Throughout 2021, proud residents are celebrating
67 the 175th anniversary of the founding of Polk County; and
78 WHEREAS, Situated in the East Texas Timberlands region, the
89 county is bordered by the Neches and Trinity Rivers; prior to
910 European settlement, the area was home to numerous Native American
1011 tribes, including the Hasinai and the Alabama and Coushatta; today,
1112 many members of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas live on the
1213 oldest reservation in the state, an approximately 10,200-acre site
1314 in the Big Thicket, and three streams in the county, Long King, Long
1415 Tom, and Tempe, bear the names of Coushatta chiefs; and
1516 WHEREAS, Named for President James K. Polk, an advocate for
1617 Texas statehood, Polk County was established by the first state
1718 legislature on March 30, 1846; Livingston was selected by vote as
1819 the county seat that same year, and the new county continued to
1920 attract Anglo settlers, who initially built communities along the
2021 Trinity River; Polk now encompasses five incorporated cities,
2122 Livingston, Corrigan, Onalaska, Goodrich, and Seven Oaks; and
2223 WHEREAS, Polk County is admired by residents and visitors
2324 alike for the natural beauty of its rolling hills and majestic pine
2425 forests; tourism plays a major role in the regional economy, with
2526 outdoor enthusiasts enjoying outstanding bird-watching and such
2627 activities as fishing, boating, pontoon tours, and horseback riding
2728 at Lake Livingston; local attractions also include the Polk County
2829 Memorial Museum; and
2930 WHEREAS, A consistent leader in timber production in Texas,
3031 Polk County supports many other industries as well, including
3132 farming and ranching; moreover, a high percentage of the workforce
3233 is involved in health care, helping to meet the needs of its growing
3334 population; and
3435 WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work together
3536 to build a bright future, the people of Polk County may take great
3637 pride in the important role their communities continue to play in
3738 the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3940 Legislature hereby commemorate the 175th anniversary of the
4041 founding of Polk County and extend to its citizens sincere best
4142 wishes for the future.
