5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Throughout 2021, proud residents are celebrating |

6 | 7 | | the 175th anniversary of the founding of Polk County; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the East Texas Timberlands region, the |

8 | 9 | | county is bordered by the Neches and Trinity Rivers; prior to |
---|
9 | 10 | | European settlement, the area was home to numerous Native American |
---|
10 | 11 | | tribes, including the Hasinai and the Alabama and Coushatta; today, |
---|
11 | 12 | | many members of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas live on the |
---|
12 | 13 | | oldest reservation in the state, an approximately 10,200-acre site |
---|
13 | 14 | | in the Big Thicket, and three streams in the county, Long King, Long |
---|
14 | 15 | | Tom, and Tempe, bear the names of Coushatta chiefs; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Named for President James K. Polk, an advocate for |

16 | 17 | | Texas statehood, Polk County was established by the first state |

17 | 18 | | legislature on March 30, 1846; Livingston was selected by vote as |

18 | 19 | | the county seat that same year, and the new county continued to |
---|
19 | 20 | | attract Anglo settlers, who initially built communities along the |

20 | 21 | | Trinity River; Polk now encompasses five incorporated cities, |
---|
21 | 22 | | Livingston, Corrigan, Onalaska, Goodrich, and Seven Oaks; and |

22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Polk County is admired by residents and visitors |

23 | 24 | | alike for the natural beauty of its rolling hills and majestic pine |

24 | 25 | | forests; tourism plays a major role in the regional economy, with |

25 | 26 | | outdoor enthusiasts enjoying outstanding bird-watching and such |

26 | 27 | | activities as fishing, boating, pontoon tours, and horseback riding |

27 | 28 | | at Lake Livingston; local attractions also include the Polk County |

28 | 29 | | Memorial Museum; and |

29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, A consistent leader in timber production in Texas, |

30 | 31 | | Polk County supports many other industries as well, including |

31 | 32 | | farming and ranching; moreover, a high percentage of the workforce |
---|
32 | 33 | | is involved in health care, helping to meet the needs of its growing |
---|
33 | 34 | | population; and |

34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work together |

35 | 36 | | to build a bright future, the people of Polk County may take great |
---|
36 | 37 | | pride in the important role their communities continue to play in |
---|
37 | 38 | | the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |

38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |
---|
39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 175th anniversary of the |
---|
40 | 41 | | founding of Polk County and extend to its citizens sincere best |
---|
41 | 42 | | wishes for the future. |
