45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The life of an admired civic leader drew to a close
67 with the passing of Marilyn Ruth Cohn Schwartz on February 25, 2021,
78 at the age of 88; and
89 WHEREAS, The daughter of Julius and Dorothy Cohn, the former
910 Marilyn Cohn was born in San Diego, Texas, on May 27, 1932, and grew
1011 up in Harlingen; she majored in art at The University of Texas at
1112 Austin, where A. R. "Babe" Schwartz won her heart; married on July
1213 14, 1951, they settled in Galveston to raise four treasured sons,
1314 Bob, Dick, John, and Tom; eventually, she knew the joy of welcoming
1415 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren into her extended family
1516 circle, which also included many cousins and friends of her
1617 children, to whom she was a second mother; she and her husband were
1718 united for 67 years until his death in 2018; and
1819 WHEREAS, Mrs. Schwartz worked in a number of capacities,
1920 including substitute teacher, secretary, and insurance agent;
2021 moreover, her discipline and superb organizational skills were
2122 crucial to her husband in his career in the Texas House and Senate,
2223 beguiling even his staunch opponents with her grace and diplomacy;
2324 active for decades in the Senate Ladies Club, she served as
2425 president, secretary, and historian; she was a highly knowledgeable
2526 docent at the Governor's Mansion, and she meticulously planned the
2627 biennial Easter egg hunts on the grounds, even marshaling her grown
2728 grandchildren into stuffy bunny and chicken costumes; and
2829 WHEREAS, Dedicated to her community, Mrs. Schwartz served on
2930 the board of Bank of the West and championed beach conservation as a
3031 member of the Galveston Park Board of Trustees; she enjoyed using
3132 her gifts as a painter and illustrated her mother's books; to the
3233 end, she retained her wisdom, resolve, and marvelous sense of
3334 humor; and
3435 WHEREAS, Marilyn Schwartz lived a life rich in family,
3536 friends, and meaningful service, and she will forever hold a
3637 special place in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her;
3738 now, therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3940 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Marilyn Schwartz and
4041 extend deepest condolences to her loved ones; and, be it further
4142 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4243 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4344 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Marilyn
4445 Schwartz.
