| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The life of an admired civic leader drew to a close |

| 6 | 7 | | with the passing of Marilyn Ruth Cohn Schwartz on February 25, 2021, |

| 7 | 8 | | at the age of 88; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Julius and Dorothy Cohn, the former |

| 9 | 10 | | Marilyn Cohn was born in San Diego, Texas, on May 27, 1932, and grew |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | up in Harlingen; she majored in art at The University of Texas at |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Austin, where A. R. "Babe" Schwartz won her heart; married on July |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | 14, 1951, they settled in Galveston to raise four treasured sons, |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Bob, Dick, John, and Tom; eventually, she knew the joy of welcoming |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren into her extended family |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | circle, which also included many cousins and friends of her |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | children, to whom she was a second mother; she and her husband were |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | united for 67 years until his death in 2018; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Schwartz worked in a number of capacities, |

| 19 | 20 | | including substitute teacher, secretary, and insurance agent; |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | moreover, her discipline and superb organizational skills were |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | crucial to her husband in his career in the Texas House and Senate, |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | beguiling even his staunch opponents with her grace and diplomacy; |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | active for decades in the Senate Ladies Club, she served as |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | president, secretary, and historian; she was a highly knowledgeable |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | docent at the Governor's Mansion, and she meticulously planned the |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | biennial Easter egg hunts on the grounds, even marshaling her grown |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | grandchildren into stuffy bunny and chicken costumes; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Dedicated to her community, Mrs. Schwartz served on |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | the board of Bank of the West and championed beach conservation as a |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | member of the Galveston Park Board of Trustees; she enjoyed using |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | her gifts as a painter and illustrated her mother's books; to the |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | end, she retained her wisdom, resolve, and marvelous sense of |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | humor; and |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Marilyn Schwartz lived a life rich in family, |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | friends, and meaningful service, and she will forever hold a |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | special place in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her; |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | now, therefore, be it |

| 38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Marilyn Schwartz and |

| 40 | 41 | | extend deepest condolences to her loved ones; and, be it further |

| 41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
