45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The Honorable Nicholas Chu, justice of the peace for
67 Precinct 5 in Travis County, has demonstrated remarkable initiative
78 and commitment to service during the COVID-19 pandemic; and
89 WHEREAS, In 2017, Judge Nick Chu was elected to office,
910 becoming the first Asian American justice of the peace in the State
1011 of Texas; after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he was
1112 the first judge in Texas to preside over a fully virtual jury trial
1213 and the first in the nation to preside over a fully virtual criminal
1314 jury trial; he serves as chair of the Texas Supreme Court COVID-19
1415 Response Task Force for Justice Courts and as a member of its Remote
1516 Proceedings Task Force; throughout the pandemic, he has been a
1617 leader in protecting renters from eviction and in implementing
1718 appropriate protocols to limit the public's exposure to the
1819 COVID-19 virus, and measures he has developed have been adopted by
1920 courts across Texas; and
2021 WHEREAS, The first in his family to become an attorney, Judge
2122 Chu earned his bachelor's degree in government from The University
2223 of Texas and his law degree from Baylor University; he has served on
2324 the executive committee of the American Bar Association National
2425 Conference of Specialized Court Judges and as a faculty member of
2526 the Texas Justice Court Training Center; he has also held many
2627 leadership positions in the Democratic Party in Texas, and he has
2728 been the chair of the Committee on Political Education for the
2829 Central Labor Council; and
2930 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Judge Chu benefits from the
3031 love and support of his wife, Kathryn, and his daughter, Vivia; and
3132 WHEREAS, Nick Chu's dedication, integrity, and spirit of
3233 innovation have greatly benefited the citizens of Travis County
3334 during a time of crisis, and he is truly deserving of special
3435 recognition for his impressive efforts; now, therefore, be it
3536 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
3637 Legislature hereby commend Judge Nicholas Chu for his service to
3738 Travis County during the COVID-19 pandemic and extend to him
3839 sincere best wishes for continued success in his important work;
3940 and, be it further
4041 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4142 prepared for Judge Chu as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4243 House of Representatives.
