5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Honorable Nicholas Chu, justice of the peace for |

6 | 7 | | Precinct 5 in Travis County, has demonstrated remarkable initiative |

7 | 8 | | and commitment to service during the COVID-19 pandemic; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In 2017, Judge Nick Chu was elected to office, |
---|
9 | 10 | | becoming the first Asian American justice of the peace in the State |
---|
10 | 11 | | of Texas; after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he was |
---|
11 | 12 | | the first judge in Texas to preside over a fully virtual jury trial |
---|
12 | 13 | | and the first in the nation to preside over a fully virtual criminal |
---|
13 | 14 | | jury trial; he serves as chair of the Texas Supreme Court COVID-19 |
---|
14 | 15 | | Response Task Force for Justice Courts and as a member of its Remote |
---|
15 | 16 | | Proceedings Task Force; throughout the pandemic, he has been a |
---|
16 | 17 | | leader in protecting renters from eviction and in implementing |
---|
17 | 18 | | appropriate protocols to limit the public's exposure to the |
---|
18 | 19 | | COVID-19 virus, and measures he has developed have been adopted by |
---|
19 | 20 | | courts across Texas; and |

20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The first in his family to become an attorney, Judge |
---|
21 | 22 | | Chu earned his bachelor's degree in government from The University |
---|
22 | 23 | | of Texas and his law degree from Baylor University; he has served on |
---|
23 | 24 | | the executive committee of the American Bar Association National |
---|
24 | 25 | | Conference of Specialized Court Judges and as a faculty member of |
---|
25 | 26 | | the Texas Justice Court Training Center; he has also held many |
---|
26 | 27 | | leadership positions in the Democratic Party in Texas, and he has |
---|
27 | 28 | | been the chair of the Committee on Political Education for the |
---|
28 | 29 | | Central Labor Council; and |

29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Judge Chu benefits from the |
---|
30 | 31 | | love and support of his wife, Kathryn, and his daughter, Vivia; and |

31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Nick Chu's dedication, integrity, and spirit of |

32 | 33 | | innovation have greatly benefited the citizens of Travis County |

33 | 34 | | during a time of crisis, and he is truly deserving of special |

34 | 35 | | recognition for his impressive efforts; now, therefore, be it |

35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commend Judge Nicholas Chu for his service to |

37 | 38 | | Travis County during the COVID-19 pandemic and extend to him |
