| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and this |

| 6 | 7 | | occasion provides a fitting opportunity to promote better |

| 7 | 8 | | understanding of issues regarding mental health and to foster |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | support for individuals who are affected by mental illness; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Mental illness encompasses a range of health |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | conditions that influence a person's thoughts, feelings, behavior, |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | and mood; these conditions include depression, psychosis, and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | various disorders, all of which have the potential to profoundly |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | impact an individual's life and relationships; research suggests |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | that mental illness is associated with multiple causes, including |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | genetics, environmental factors, exposure to traumatic events, and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | biochemical processes; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, According to the National Alliance on Mental |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Illness, more than 50 million U.S. adults experienced mental |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | illness in 2019, while recent annual statistics on children and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | adolescents indicate that more than 7 million experienced a mental |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | health disorder; although early treatment can significantly |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | improve wellness and recovery outcomes, many people do not seek out |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | the help they need due to the stigma associated with mental illness, |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | as well as an inability to recognize symptoms and a lack of |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | knowledge about health care resources; depending on each patient's |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | unique experience, treatment may include medication, therapy, |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | social support, and educational programs; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, More work remains to be done to fight the stigma |

| 29 | 30 | | surrounding mental illness and to highlight the importance of |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | treatment, and the observance of Mental Health Awareness Month |

| 31 | 32 | | unites Texans in their commitment to these efforts; now, therefore, |

| 33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

| 34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 2021 as Mental Health Awareness |

| 35 | 36 | | Month and encourage all residents of the Lone Star State to learn |

| 36 | 37 | | more about mental health issues. |
