5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Alex Sutton retired on December 4, 2020, as |

6 | 7 | | co-president of The Woodlands Development Company, a subsidiary of |

7 | 8 | | The Howard Hughes Corporation; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A licensed professional engineer and certified |
---|
9 | 10 | | public accountant, Mr. Sutton holds both a bachelor's and a |
---|
10 | 11 | | master's degree in civil engineering from Rice University, as well |
---|
11 | 12 | | as a master's degree in business administration from the University |
---|
12 | 13 | | of Houston; he worked with the Exxon Mobil Corporation and then |
---|
13 | 14 | | managed complex projects for municipal and private clients as a |
---|
14 | 15 | | shareholder in Pate Engineers; after eight years as a consultant |
---|
15 | 16 | | for The Woodlands, he joined The Woodlands Development Company as |
---|
16 | 17 | | vice president of engineering and construction in 1994; eleven |
---|
17 | 18 | | years later, he was named co-president; and |

18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Sutton managed the design and construction of |

19 | 20 | | the extension of major thoroughfares in The Woodlands, as well as |
---|
20 | 21 | | residential home sections, commercial building sites, The |
---|
21 | 22 | | Woodlands Waterway, and all six Waterway bridges; in addition, he |
---|
22 | 23 | | oversaw such commercial developments as Town Green Park, Waterway |
---|
23 | 24 | | Square, and numerous hotel, retail, multifamily, and office |
---|
24 | 25 | | buildings; during his tenure, the population of The Woodlands grew |
---|
25 | 26 | | from 10,000 to 115,000; and |
---|
26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Dedicated to founder George Mitchell's vision of The |
---|
27 | 28 | | Woodlands as a self-contained community with a strong social |
---|
28 | 29 | | fabric, Mr. Sutton benefited his fellow residents through both his |
---|
29 | 30 | | professional endeavors and his civic engagement; he was a founding |
---|
30 | 31 | | director and chair of The Woodlands Arts Council and director of The |
---|
31 | 32 | | Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, The Woodlands Economic |
---|
32 | 33 | | Development Partnership, and the Montgomery County Community |
---|
33 | 34 | | Foundation; his many leadership roles further included director and |
---|
34 | 35 | | chair of the North Houston Association, Montgomery County Youth |
---|
35 | 36 | | Services, and Interfaith of The Woodlands, which named him a |
---|
36 | 37 | | Hometown Hero in 2019; and |

37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Alex Sutton was instrumental in the evolution of The |

38 | 39 | | Woodlands into one of the country's most vibrant master-planned |
---|
39 | 40 | | communities, and his outstanding contributions will continue to |
---|
40 | 41 | | resonate in the years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Alex Sutton on his retirement as |

43 | 44 | | co-president of The Woodlands Development Company and extend to him |

44 | 45 | | sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
