45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The citizens of Henderson County take great pride in
67 the area's rich history and in a county government with a deep
78 commitment to preserving the region's heritage; and
89 WHEREAS, Set amid the picturesque timberlands and rolling
910 hills of East Texas, the area was originally home to several Native
1011 American tribes; European settlers arrived after the Texas
1112 Revolution in 1836 and founded the community of Buffalo; carved out
1213 of Nacogdoches and Houston Counties, Henderson County was
1314 established on April 27, 1846, and named for James Pinckney
1415 Henderson, the first governor of the State of Texas; two years
1516 later, it was reconfigured within its present borders, and the
1617 county seat was moved to Athens, which was chosen as the site for
1718 the "courthouse under the oaks"; and
1819 WHEREAS, Today, the county's economy benefits from cattle
1920 ranching, timber, retail trade, and tourism, among other
2021 enterprises, and visitors and residents alike delight in the
2122 opportunities for hunting, fishing, and birding along the Texas
2223 Forest Trail and the Texas Lakes Trail; and
2324 WHEREAS, The county is fortunate to have many dedicated
2425 public officials who work tirelessly to preserve this rich heritage
2526 while helping to build a more prosperous future; these include
2627 County Judge Wade McKinney and the members of the Commissioners
2728 Court, Wendy Spivey of Precinct 1, Scott Tuley of Precinct 2,
2829 Charles "Chuck" McHam of Precinct 3, and Mark Richardson of
2930 Precinct 4, as well as county attorney Clint Davis, county clerk
3031 Mary Margaret Wright, tax assessor Peggy Goodall, county treasurer
3132 Michael Bynum, and district clerk Betty Herriage; and
3233 WHEREAS, The county's expert law enforcement personnel
3334 include Sheriff Botie Hillhouse and constables Thomas Goodell of
3435 Precinct 1, Mitch Baker of Precinct 2, David Grubbs of Precinct 3,
3536 John Floyd of Precinct 4, and Brad Miers of Precinct 5; the courts
3637 benefit from the efforts of district attorney Jenny Palmer, Judge
3738 Dan Moore of the 173rd District Court, Judge Scott McKee of the
3839 392nd District Court, Judge Mark Calhoon of the 3rd District Court,
3940 Judge Scott Williams of County Court at Law 1, and Judge Nancy
4041 Perryman of County Court at Law 2; and
4142 WHEREAS, The year 2021 marks the 175th anniversary of
4243 Henderson County, and its hardworking and innovative residents
4344 continue to honor their history as they look forward to the
4445 challenges and opportunities that lie ahead; now, therefore, be it
4546 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas
4647 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the heritage of Henderson County
4748 and extend to the county's elected officials sincere best wishes
4849 for continued success in their important work; and, be it further
4950 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5051 prepared for Henderson County as an expression of high regard by the
5152 Texas House of Representatives.
