5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Henderson County take great pride in |

6 | 7 | | the area's rich history and in a county government with a deep |

7 | 8 | | commitment to preserving the region's heritage; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Set amid the picturesque timberlands and rolling |
---|
9 | 10 | | hills of East Texas, the area was originally home to several Native |
---|
10 | 11 | | American tribes; European settlers arrived after the Texas |
---|
11 | 12 | | Revolution in 1836 and founded the community of Buffalo; carved out |
---|
12 | 13 | | of Nacogdoches and Houston Counties, Henderson County was |
---|
13 | 14 | | established on April 27, 1846, and named for James Pinckney |
---|
14 | 15 | | Henderson, the first governor of the State of Texas; two years |
---|
15 | 16 | | later, it was reconfigured within its present borders, and the |
---|
16 | 17 | | county seat was moved to Athens, which was chosen as the site for |
---|
17 | 18 | | the "courthouse under the oaks"; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Today, the county's economy benefits from cattle |
---|
19 | 20 | | ranching, timber, retail trade, and tourism, among other |
---|
20 | 21 | | enterprises, and visitors and residents alike delight in the |
---|
21 | 22 | | opportunities for hunting, fishing, and birding along the Texas |
---|
22 | 23 | | Forest Trail and the Texas Lakes Trail; and |

23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The county is fortunate to have many dedicated |

24 | 25 | | public officials who work tirelessly to preserve this rich heritage |

25 | 26 | | while helping to build a more prosperous future; these include |

26 | 27 | | County Judge Wade McKinney and the members of the Commissioners |

27 | 28 | | Court, Wendy Spivey of Precinct 1, Scott Tuley of Precinct 2, |

45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas |

46 | 47 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the heritage of Henderson County |

47 | 48 | | and extend to the county's elected officials sincere best wishes |

48 | 49 | | for continued success in their important work; and, be it further |

49 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
