66 AN ACT
77 relating to the jurisdiction of justice courts.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Section 27.031(a), Government Code, is amended
1010 to read as follows:
1111 (a) In addition to the jurisdiction and powers provided by
1212 the constitution and other law, the justice court has original
1313 jurisdiction of:
1414 (1) civil matters in which exclusive jurisdiction is
1515 not in the district or county court and in which the amount in
1616 controversy is not more than $20,000, exclusive of interest;
1717 (2) cases of forcible entry and detainer; [and]
1818 (3) foreclosure of mortgages and enforcement of liens
1919 on personal property in cases in which the amount in controversy is
2020 otherwise within the justice court's jurisdiction; and
2121 (4) offenses under the laws of this state relating to
2222 fraudulent conveyance of interests in real property.
2323 SECTION 2. Section 27.031(a), Government Code, as amended
2424 by this Act, applies only to a cause of action filed on or after the
2525 effective date of this Act. A cause of action filed before the
2626 effective date of this Act is governed by the law in effect
2727 immediately before that date, and that law is continued in effect
2828 for that purpose.
2929 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2021.
