55 AN ACT
66 relating to voting while confined in jail.
77 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
88 SECTION 1. Subchapter E, Chapter 31, Election Code, is
99 amended by adding Section 31.125 to read as follows:
1010 Sec. 31.125. VOTER EDUCATION FOR PERSONS CONFINED IN JAIL.
1111 (a) The secretary of state, the authority in charge of the jail in
1212 each county, and the early voting clerk of each county shall take
1313 appropriate action to:
1414 (1) inform each qualified voter confined in jail of
1515 the voter's right to vote; and
1616 (2) provide the qualified voter an opportunity to
1717 vote.
1818 (b) The authority in charge of the jail shall allow a person
1919 who is qualified to vote and confined in jail access to a voter
2020 registrar or deputy voter registrar for the purpose of submitting
2121 an application to register to vote.
2222 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2021.
