| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 6002.052(b), Insurance Code, is amended |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | (b) Under rules adopted under Section 6002.051, the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | department may create specialized licenses or registration |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | certificates for an organization or individual engaged in the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | business of planning, certifying, leasing, selling, servicing, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | installing, monitoring, or maintaining fire alarm or fire detection |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | devices or systems. The rules must establish appropriate training |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | and qualification standards and continuing education requirements |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | for each kind of license and certificate. |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | SECTION 2. Section 6002.159(b), Insurance Code, is amended |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | to read as follows: |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | (b) If the commissioner certifies continuing education |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | programs under this section, the commissioner by rule shall require |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | license holders to participate [Participation] in the [continuing |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | education] programs [is voluntary]. |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | SECTION 3. The change in law made by this Act applies only |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | to a license issued or renewed on or after the effective date of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | this Act. A license issued or renewed before the effective date of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | this Act is governed by the law in effect immediately before the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | effective date of this Act, and that law is continued in effect for |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | that purpose. |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2021. |
