66 AN ACT
77 relating to the participation of the medical school at the
88 University of Houston and the college of osteopathic medicine at
99 Sam Houston State University in the Joint Admission Medical
1010 Program.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Section 51.821(4), Education Code, is amended to
1313 read as follows:
1414 (4) "Participating medical school" means each of the
1515 following entities:
1616 (A) the medical school at The University of Texas
1717 Health Science Center at Houston;
1818 (B) the medical school at The University of Texas
1919 Southwestern Medical Center;
2020 (C) the medical school at The University of Texas
2121 Health Science Center at San Antonio;
2222 (D) the medical school at The University of Texas
2323 Medical Branch at Galveston;
2424 (E) the medical school at the Texas Tech
2525 University Health Sciences Center at Lubbock;
2626 (F) the medical school at the Texas Tech
2727 University Health Sciences Center at El Paso;
2828 (G) the Baylor College of Medicine;
2929 (H) the college of osteopathic medicine at the
3030 University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth;
3131 (I) the medical school at The Texas A&M
3232 University System Health Science Center;
3333 (J) the medical school at The University of Texas
3434 at Austin; [and]
3535 (K) the medical school at The University of Texas
3636 Rio Grande Valley;
3737 (L) the medical school at the University of
3838 Houston; and
3939 (M) the college of osteopathic medicine at Sam
4040 Houston State University.
4141 SECTION 2. (a) As soon as practicable after the effective
4242 date of this Act, the medical school at the University of Houston
4343 and the college of osteopathic medicine at Sam Houston State
4444 University each shall:
4545 (1) enter into the agreement with the Joint Admission
4646 Medical Program Council required by Section 51.829, Education Code;
4747 and
4848 (2) select an appropriate faculty member to represent
4949 the respective medical school on the council.
5050 (b) The medical school at the University of Houston and the
5151 college of osteopathic medicine at Sam Houston State University
5252 each shall provide internships and mentoring under the Joint
5353 Admission Medical Program as appropriate beginning not later than
5454 the 2022-2023 academic year, but are not required before the
5555 2023-2024 academic year to admit participating students to the
5656 school or college under the program.
5757 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
5858 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
5959 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
6060 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
6161 Act takes effect September 1, 2021.
