1 | 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 119 |
---|
2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Obesity is a serious public health concern in the |
---|
3 | 3 | | United States, where more than 42 percent of all adults qualify |
---|
4 | 4 | | as obese and the number of people with severe obesity continues |
---|
5 | 5 | | to grow; in the State of Texas, the adult obesity rate is 34 |
---|
6 | 6 | | percent; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Experts and researchers agree that obesity is a |
---|
8 | 8 | | complex disease that is influenced by a variety of physiological, |
---|
9 | 9 | | environmental, and genetic factors; those affected by the |
---|
10 | 10 | | disease are at higher risk of developing many other health |
---|
11 | 11 | | conditions, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, |
---|
12 | 12 | | cardiovascular disease, stroke, and some types of cancer; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, While prevention programs have successfully |
---|
14 | 14 | | established the seriousness of the public health crisis posed by |
---|
15 | 15 | | obesity, it is also imperative that individuals and families with |
---|
16 | 16 | | the disease receive comprehensive care and treatment; research |
---|
17 | 17 | | suggests that losing as little as five to ten percent of total |
---|
18 | 18 | | body weight can mitigate the health risks of obesity, but studies |
---|
19 | 19 | | also show that the bias and stigma associated with the disease |
---|
20 | 20 | | are significant barriers to effective treatment; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Health care professionals, policy makers, |
---|
22 | 22 | | patients, and families should regard obesity with the same level |
---|
23 | 23 | | of importance as other chronic diseases; further, obese patients |
---|
24 | 24 | | should be treated with respect and compassion and should be |
---|
25 | 25 | | provided with assistance in exploring options for weight loss and |
---|
26 | 26 | | weight management, including reduced-calorie diets, physical |
---|
27 | 27 | | activity, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric surgery; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Improving the treatment of obesity will require |
---|
29 | 29 | | concerted action on a number of levels, and the observance of |
---|
30 | 30 | | Obesity Care Week, which takes place from February 28 to March 6, |
---|
31 | 31 | | 2021, serves to highlight the urgency of this public health issue |
---|
32 | 32 | | and the need to implement a patient-centered, research-driven |
---|
33 | 33 | | model of care; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 28 to March 6, 2021, as |
---|

---|
37 | 37 | | Lone Star State to learn more about lifestyle habits that can |
---|
38 | 38 | | lead to better health. |
