11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 119
22 WHEREAS, Obesity is a serious public health concern in the
33 United States, where more than 42 percent of all adults qualify
44 as obese and the number of people with severe obesity continues
55 to grow; in the State of Texas, the adult obesity rate is 34
66 percent; and
77 WHEREAS, Experts and researchers agree that obesity is a
88 complex disease that is influenced by a variety of physiological,
99 environmental, and genetic factors; those affected by the
1010 disease are at higher risk of developing many other health
1111 conditions, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure,
1212 cardiovascular disease, stroke, and some types of cancer; and
1313 WHEREAS, While prevention programs have successfully
1414 established the seriousness of the public health crisis posed by
1515 obesity, it is also imperative that individuals and families with
1616 the disease receive comprehensive care and treatment; research
1717 suggests that losing as little as five to ten percent of total
1818 body weight can mitigate the health risks of obesity, but studies
1919 also show that the bias and stigma associated with the disease
2020 are significant barriers to effective treatment; and
2121 WHEREAS, Health care professionals, policy makers,
2222 patients, and families should regard obesity with the same level
2323 of importance as other chronic diseases; further, obese patients
2424 should be treated with respect and compassion and should be
2525 provided with assistance in exploring options for weight loss and
2626 weight management, including reduced-calorie diets, physical
2727 activity, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric surgery; and
2828 WHEREAS, Improving the treatment of obesity will require
2929 concerted action on a number of levels, and the observance of
3030 Obesity Care Week, which takes place from February 28 to March 6,
3131 2021, serves to highlight the urgency of this public health issue
3232 and the need to implement a patient-centered, research-driven
3333 model of care; now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th
3535 Legislature, hereby recognize February 28 to March 6, 2021, as
3636 Obesity Care Week in Texas and encourage all residents of the
3737 Lone Star State to learn more about lifestyle habits that can
3838 lead to better health.
