SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 130 WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed member of the Greatest Generation is indeed cause for celebration, and Elizabeth Frances Redfern Newberg of Marshall marked this momentous milestone in her life on December 25, 2020; and WHEREAS, Born in Winfield in 1920, the former Elizabeth Redfern lived on a farm in her early years and graduated from Marshall High School; her patriotism led her to become one of the first to enlist in the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve during World War II; after training at Hunter College in New York and then Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, she was stationed in San Francisco, where she performed clerical work and attained the rank of sergeant; and WHEREAS, She married the love of her life, Glenn W. Newberg, in 1947, and they became the parents of three sons, Glenn, Mark, and Michael, and two daughters, Mary and Martha; the next two generations included eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; devoted to her family, Mrs. Newberg stayed so busy taking care of them all that one of her sons has joked that he was 50 years old before he realized mothers sat down; and WHEREAS, Through the years, Mrs. Newberg has always demonstrated her love for her country by displaying an American flag on her porch; she still snaps to attention whenever she hears the Marine Corps hymn; and WHEREAS, Elizabeth Newberg is a source of tremendous inspiration, and in sharing the experience gained through a century of life well lived, she bestows a precious gift of wisdom that benefits all who are fortunate enough to know her; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th Legislature, hereby congratulate Elizabeth Frances Redfern Newberg on her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared for Mrs. Newberg as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
